Glen Clarke Obituary

Dr. Glen Clarke, ("Doc"), the most stubborn man on the planet grudgingly relinquished his title on June 27, 2013. He was born on a small farm in Marceline, MO on St. Patrick's Day in 1934, the youngest of three children. He graduated from Kansas State, and served in the US Air Force. He was stationed in Greece and fell in love with the blue sea and Greek cooking. He was also stationed in Ontario, Oregon and fell in love again, this time with an Idaho farm-girl named Joanie. They met on his birthday. Exactly one year later they married. They had three children, many adventures and their fair share of heartache. Through it all they loved each other.
He never had any hobbies. He didn't fish or golf or garden. His life was being a veterinarian. He worked six days a week. His practice, Long Point Animal Clinic, focused on small animals including the occasional bobcat or skunk, but early in his career he worked at the St. Louis Zoo. His patients included hippos, monkeys, and the Budweiser Clydesdales. He had a soft spot for misfits and his house and clinic became a haven for cross-eyed cats and untrainable dogs.
He could flip an omelet and grill a mean steak. He put ketchup on his eggs, and just about everything else, but neither he nor anyone else ever put ketchup on one of his steaks. There are some things you just don't do. He liked a cold beer or a good glass of scotch, Blue Bell ice cream, books about history, Reece's peanut butter cups, and sports on tv. He believed in doing things his own way, was fiercely independent and (almost) always right. He would end a conversation by saying, "Drive careful", which meant "go away, I'm done talking to you", but also "I love you." That was just his way.
He was preceded in death by his son Daniel, his wife Joan, and his sister Charlene McCroskey. He is survived by his daughters Necia Muir (David), of Katy, TX and Sarah Wixson (Todd). of Yakima, WA, grandchildren Tristin and Daveigh Muir, Katy, TX and Eli, Lillian and Samuel Wixson, Yakima, WA and his brother Fred Clarke, Ramstein, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. There will be celebration of Dr. Clarke's life on July 6th at 3 o'clock at the Deerfield Village Recreation Center, 4045 Deerfield Village Dr., Houston, TX 77084.

I am so saddened to learn of Dr. Clarke's passing. He was our vet since the mid 1980s when he saved our Manx cat after an accident and cared and boarded many of our cats since then. He was a joy to see each and every time we brought our cats to him. My daughters loved Dr. Clarke! I have a picture with him from my last annual visit with my cats, "Eli" and "Amber". Dr. Clarke was a great credit to his profession. My condolences to his children of whom he was very proud.

It saddens me, to the point of distraction that one of the profound influences in my life is now silent. Goodbye old friend.

Thank you for the many many years of service to pet owners in Spring Branch. When I was a teen and found a kitten in the dunkin donuts dumpster Dr. Clarke fixed that kitty right up and we took her home. That kitty lived a long and wonderful life thanks to all the care Dr. Clarke gave her. Dr. Clarke was an inspiration to me and will be missed by many!

Dr. Clarke took care of our animals for almost forty years. He was a friend to all of them as well as a friend to us. We will miss him. May God comfort his family and keep his memory always fresh in their hearts and minds.

To the family,he was the best Vet. ever! He cared not only for our pets, for us as we cared for them. Over 25+ years we relied on him for sound, solid and truthful advice and he never failed us. A diamond in the rough for sure. Thank you for sharing him with all of us.
