Grant Cook Obituary

Grant Cook
1937-2021
Damon Grant Cook, attorney and resident of Houston, passed away on March 13, 2021 at the age of 83.
Grant is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kelly Cook Lybrand and Julio Lybrand, his grandson Crady Helt, all residents of Houston, Texas as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Tim Cook and Marilyn Cook, and his nephew Grant Cook, all of Austin, Texas and his niece, Liza Cook Kelso of Richmond, Virginia. Kyle Cook, Grant's beloved son, predeceased him on January 11, 2015, but lived on in his heart for the rest of his days. As a testament to Grant's abiding faith he believed in his heart that he would be once again reunited with his Momma Cook, Daddy Cook, Kylie Boo and all the other dear friends and relatives who have crossed the river before him and are now joyfully embraced in the loving arms of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Grant was born in Fort Worth, Texas on March 27, 1937 to his parents W.E. Buster Cook and Edith Lorene Cook late of Houston, Texas. Grant grew up from the age of nine in Beaumont, Texas. A graduate of Beaumont High School in 1955, Grant attended Tulane University and Baylor Law School where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1961. For the ensuing sixty years Grant served as a civil trial lawyer in Houston, Texas. Over the course of his career he represented a number of Fortune 500 companies, as well as property owners, individual investors, and banking organizations in the capacity of both plaintiff and defendant. Prior to his death he was a member of The Faubus Firm of Houston, Texas.
Over the course of his career Grant was admitted to practice law by the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits, and the Texas and New York Bar Associations. He was admitted as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and as an Associate in the American Board of Trial Advocates as well as various local and state bar associations. He was recognized on numerous occasions for his work in the field, earning the title of one of the Best Lawyers in Texas by the Wall Street Journal and inclusion into publications including Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in America. Grant considered among his most satisfying accomplishments the friendships and relationships he developed over his many years as a mentor and counselor for many of his colleagues, particularly younger lawyers beginning their careers. Grant was a lawyer's lawyer.
Grant was a long time member of the Chaplewood United Methodist Church and greatly enjoyed participating in the bible studies group and the interactions with his fellow members.
An avid golfer, Grant was a lifelong member of Brae Burn Country Club and from time to time provided pro bono representation to members of the Brae Burn staff who needed his help. Grant was a member of the Tejas Vaqueros for 38 years and a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity since 1955.
Due to the social limitations imposed by the Covid Virus, a memorial service will be held at the appropriate time in the future. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations in Grant's name should be made to the M.D. Andersen Cancer Center.

Uncle Grant as I knew him was my godfather and dear friend of my parents Dr Jim and Marjorie Doster. He handled my adoption in 1967 in Houston. He petitioned the judge many times to unseal my records to no avail. I found my biological family and wanted to let him know he was right. He said my birth mother was tall, beautiful and seemed resolute and loved me enough to give me a better life. I'm sure he knows now. My condolences to the family. He wasn't my real uncle of course, but he was always there for my mama after my daddy died. That meant everything to me. Rest in the arms of the Savior Jesus

I was a paralegal at Reynolds, Allen, and Cook in the late 70s and early 80s. Grant was a mentor and a friend to me. He was larger than life, but he had a generous spirit, and though I was a mile lower than him on the totem pole, he never seemed to notice the distance. I am sure I'm not the only one of his employees who thought of him as a friend. That was how he treated us. I am so sorry to hear about his death. My condolences to his family.

I held Grant in high regard, not only for his profound legal skill, but also for his kindness. In every regard, Grant was just a great guy.

Oh, what a great guy and even greater lawyer Grant Cook was! I know Kyle was waiting with open arms and heart and they are now with Joe Reynolds and so many others who have gone before. Grant will be missed by so, so many.

Wonderful trial lawyer with a big generous heart

Joe Reynolds and Grant Cook together offered me my first job as a new lawyer in Houston in 1971 and I worked and trained and learned from both of them for much of my career. I remained with the Reynolds & Cook firm for the first 17 years of my career as a lawyer and I still regard those years as the highlight of my professional life. Grant, in particular, taught me and many others to try lawsuits both to judges and juries around the State of Texas and in other parts of the country and to do so in a professional, ethical and effective manner. Grant and Joe were idols to me and so many others. I will be forever grateful for Grant's contribution to my life. Rest peacefully dear friend. Ed Junell

I remember the day that Grant began working with Bracewell, Reynolds and Patterson, two floors above our law firm in the First City National Bank Building in Houston. He left to form a law firm with Joe Reynolds, Texas former Governor, Mark White, and my long time friend from Lanier Jr. H.S., David Allen. I was involved in trial matters against Grant, but even though he was an adversary, we were always personally friendly. He was tall, handsome, articulate and extremely personable, all traits which are appealing and persuasive with jurors. Joe Reynolds, a legendary trial lawyer in Houston, immediately recognized Grant's trial abilities (didn't hurt that Grant had gone to Baylor Law School). I have not visited with Grant in many years; but, kept notice of his situation with his brother and sister in law, Tim and Marilyn Cook, here in Lakeway. Grant was a "good one", and that says a lot!
RIP, friend. Joe Shaffer

Dear Kelly, Tim and families, my deepest sympathy and so many thoughts are with you. Old Grant leaves lots of wonderful memories. Just seeing the names, Buster and Loraine, made me smile through this sad notice. And Kyle, dear, dear funny Kyle! I am sorry for your losses and so close together.... Crady is especially in my thoughts. Much love with prayers that your years and years of memories will help ease your pain. Both of your parents are loved and will be missed by many.
