Harmohinder Bhatia Obituary

Harmohinder Singh Bhatia
1947-2017
It is with profound sadness that we announce our father's passing on July 7, 2017. Harmohinder S. Bhatia, M.D., FACC, FACL, FSCAI. Our father, will always be remembered as being a generous, loving and dedicated father. Professionally, he was an exceptional cardiologist in Northwest Houston where he first began his practice in 1979.
He is survived by his son, Paul (Alejandra) and grandchildren,
Catherine Victoria, Gabriel, Mateo and son, Josh (Amy) with grandchildren, Liam Cole Singh, Owen James Singh and Evie Lynne Marie. He is also survived by one brother, Jatinder (Simi) and a niece, Minni, and nephew Nikku. He leaves many friends and a fraternity of brothers from his medical school as well as his beloved dog, Buda.
He received his medical degree from Christian Medical College Ludhiana in 1970.
Dr. Bhatia earned his Fellowships in Cardiology as marks of distinction attesting to his character, ethics and his personal excellence in his practice of cardiology.
Along with Dr. Bhatia's stellar academic achievements, our father was a gifted doctor who possessed a great love, compassion and kindness for his patients. He never refused a patient who could not afford proper care. Care was always provided unconditionally for those in need. This is how we knew our father. He saved people's lives.
Dr. Bhatia was the Founder of Houston Northwest Medical Center. He worked alone, day and night for five years until he took on his first associate.
Our father also loved to play golf. He was a joy to play with because he simply enjoyed playing the game with his friends and sons. He rarely kept score, rarely followed the rules and always had a great time.
He never told a joke that he, himself, didn't find funny. So he laughed, often. His wit was sharp and his smile infectious.
Dr. Bhatia was a voracious reader and could hold conversations on a variety of subjects. He was fascinated by the universe, the laws of physics, politics, history, automobiles and much more. Speaking with him was meaningful.
The truest thing we can write about our father is that he touched so many people's lives that this world is now a better place for his passionate service to humanity.
Dr. Bhatia will be missed and his absence will always be felt.
Memorial Services will be held privately.

I was so sad to learn of Dr. Bhatia's passing. he was]an excellent physician and an even better person. I was under his care in 2015-2017 and he always took the time to invite me to his computer and teach me about precisely what we were reviewing on the screen. This type of time sacrifice and empathy seems to be missing today. He will be greatly missed and I am a better person for having known him.

Dr. Bhatia was a wonderful person who was dedicated to caring for his patients. My parents were under his care. My mother lived 25 years longer thanks to Dr. Bhatia. Each visit she would come home & tell the joke she heard from him but could never remember the punch line. My daddy always had one for him & to this day, I can hear them laughing. Dr. Bhatia cared for his patients as well as their family. He had a heart of gold, a laughter one will never forget and a huge smile.

I am so sorry for the loss of your father. He touched so many lives in so many ways. He will truly be missed by many.

I am truly saddened at the loss of a wonderful person and an amazing doctor. I worked for him in the early 1980s..he was the smartest man I knew. He was so generous and genuine...he never wanted me to ask patients for money. God Speed Dr. Bhatia, I'm a better person for having known you!

Dr. Bhatia saved my life 15 years ago while he was on call at the hospital the day of my first heart attack. Then again 1 1/2 years later after fully completing a stress test in his office I had another. He personally pushed me in a wheel chair, while his nurse Linda was spraying nitro in my mouth, form his office to the hospital.
Every visit to his office was like going to see an old friend. He always had a story to share and joked about our wheel chair day.He would also remind me that he was younger than me by a couple of months.
It was a sad day when Sabrina told me he had passed away. I will truly miss him and wish I could thank him one more time for the extended life he has given me.

I knew Harmohinder since 1980 as we started our consultant practice together in the same office and with same staff. He was quite dedicated Cardiologist and cared deeply about his patients. After few years we departed as he started his cardiology group practice and I continued my Gastroenterology practice. Our friendship lasted for years. Whenever I needed good advise I will call him and respond with same generosity as the day we first me in 1980.
My deepest Condolence to his family and may God bless him and his soul rest in piece.

We have the most wonderful memories of Bhatia from our younger days in New York and when he lived in New Jersey and then moved to Houston. He was a warm and generous friend and so much fun! Whenever we were all ready to go out, hed ask just how handsome he looked. We remember his great joy when his sons were born - he could not have been more proud of everything that Paul and Josh said and did. We are so sad that he is no longer here and send our condolences to the family. Rest in peace, Bhatia.

I am so sadden about the passing of Dr. Bhatia. He was my heart doctor for many years and I thought he was the greatest! I saw him last in 2014 when I moved from Houston. RIP Doctor and God bless your family. My sister, Alice Bennett sends her sympathy too.

There are few people of whom i can say I owe my life. Dr. Bhatia responded to an emergency room call, I was suffering chest pains. Dr. Bahtia diagnosed gurd and prescribed appropriate medication. As I was very overweight and had high blood pressure, he advised a cardiac exam, including a nuclear stress test which showed a complete blockage an important coronary artery. A stent fixed it and is still functioning today. I have enjoyed 20+ years of healthy and vigorous life since meeting Dr. Bhatia. Over the years we developed a close and personal friendship which I will always treasure. Although we were from different religious traditions, we prayed together and discussed the nature of of the Creator of the Universe. I am very sure that He has a special place in eternity for this wonderful. caring. loving, and compassionate man. My deepest heartfelt condolences to Dr. Bhatia's family and especially his longtime and devoted assistant Sabrina.

In 2015, after I had turned 80,a doctor with pen & paper in hand asked me, "To what do you attribute the fact that you have the body of a man 20 years younger than you?" FLASHBACK: March, 1991- I had severe chest pain. My wife, Nancy, who worked in administration at Houston NW Medical Center, rushed me to the nearest ER. ASAP, she transferred me to the care of Dr. Harmohinder Bhatia, the very best cardiologist anywhere. I was 56 and had never had health complications. When Dr. Bhatia said, "If you want to live, you must quit smoking," I did, then & there. He performed a perfect angioplasty procedure. This was a life changing event for me. Since then, I have worked out 4 - 6 hours/week, eaten right, and have been blessed with a happy, pain free life. I am thankful for my Savior's "Wake-up Call" on March 16, 1991, and for His messenger, Dr. Bhatia. Thank God for the life of Dr. Bhatia. Dr. Bhatia, may you rest in peace, Sir, and one day, we shall meet again, on the other side! Our prayers are with Dr. Bhatia, his family, and friends. - God's Speed, Phil Johnson Sr. - Pinehurst, TX -

In May 1981 I had a significant cardiac event (LAD, widowmaker) at age 38. Dr. Bhatia was summoned to help with my malady- praise God for that. He literally "camped out" in the ICU at Northwest Hospital for the next five days. His acumen and devotion to his calling was exceptional and shall we say top shelf. After recovery we grew a great friendship for 36 years. Dr. Bhatia was always attentive, kind, compassionate and concerned as he shared his expertise and knowledge with his patients in an understanding and professional manner. He will surely be missed. My condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his family and many friends.

I just learned about Doctor Bhatia's passing. He has been my cardiologist from my first episode at age 35. I'm 72 now and we always joked about being one of his first patients and how well I have done. We loved comparing our lives, growing old . He was a wonderful doctor and great friend. I will miss him and now wonder who I will select to take care of me. God speed Harmohinder, rest peacefully.

My wife, Yvonne, and I are deeply saddened by the loss of Harmohinder, a very dear friend, neighbor and confidant. We moved to a home across the street from Harmohinder and Ann Marie in 1981. Our friendship began after we purchased a new Cadillac soon after we moved into our home. Harmohinder had a similar blue Cadillac Coupe. He and I went to many auto auctions and shows during those early years. He often came home with one or more fine automobiles including some real treasures. One year, Ann Marie, bought him a new Porsche for his birthday. The car arrived early and we readily kept this beautiful car in our garage until his birthday arrivedsuch fun.

During these years, we both had young children and enjoyed many evenings together having pizza (and beverage) discussing a wide range of topics on politics, community happenings and world events. He was so generous with his many friends with his time, talent and treasureall with that warm smile. He always lovingly referred to Ann Marie as My Seetie One. Harmohinder's love of life, family, golf and fine automobiles was contagious! Dr. Bhatia, an excellent cardiologist who significantly advanced cardiology care in northwest Houston left an indelible mark on the lives of so many.

We miss you. Farewell dear friend.

I stumbled on this sad news this morning and I am shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Bhatia's passing. He was my Mother's doctor from the early 80s until her death in 1997. I will always remember his kindness to me and to my Mother during difficult times in the hospital. We met again in 2009 or so when he was the cardiologist for my Father-in-law and again his kind caring is what stuck me most. I loved how he loved his patients, staff and that lovely dog Buda who often accompanied him to work. His laughter was infectious and his contribution to the lives of so many people is irreplaceable. You will be missed and remembered with love always.

Dr. Bhatia never walked into our cath lab without a smile and a wise crack. I tried to always have a cup of hot tea waiting for him, and when I would walk back into my office, I would see a Styrofoam container waiting for me where he had brought me breakfast. I could never find my reading glasses because he would borrow them and forget to bring them back. We celebrated his 60th birthday in the cath lab with a goodie bag full of gifts, one of which was a salmon-colored golf shirt. Soon after, he came in wearing that shirt, and when we commented on how nice it looked on him, his response was, "I know. Don't you wish you looked this good?" He sent me flowers to cheer me up when I was going through a difficult time. He told me once he wouldn't charge his patients their co-pay if they had to wait for him more than 15 minutes. After his grandchildren were born, the first thing he'd do when he walked in the door would be pull out his phone to show us pictures and brag about what all they could say and do. He absolutely adored them. Some days, after procedures (if it was too cold, rainy, or late to play golf), he would come park himself in my office and we would just shoot the breeze about any and everything. And no one laughed harder at his jokes than he did.

His kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and dedication to his patients and his profession will always be the things I think of as I remember him. He was one of the good guys, a truly decent human being. A light has gone out for me with his passing, and my heart aches for his family and the patients he loved so much.

Goodbye, Dr. B. I will miss you.

I was a patient of Dr. Bhatia for over 22 years. Such a kind and good person and great Cardiologist. I always enjoyed my appointments with him and his genuine concern for me and each patient he had. I loved hearing all of his stories and especially about his golf game that he so enjoyed. A wonderful staff that he always joked around with and gave them a hard time, but were all so good to him and the patients. My prayers and thoughts are with the family and may Dr. Bhatia rest in peace.

Dr. Bhatia was my cardiologist for approximately 20 years and my personal life saver, as it was he who diagnosed the immediate need for by-pass surgery during catheterization 18 years ago. Not only was he an excellent, dedicated doctor, he was also a marvelous human being who loved people without question. I will surely miss him and his wonderful smile, not to mention his skill. Dr. Bhatia was a kind, caring, and generous man. He wasn't a man of many words, but he got his message across. He was always on the go, with tea in hand. Dr. Bhatia was a highly respected cardiologist, a loving dad, and a great teacher. I smile, thinking back to my years of being his office nurse.

July 12, 2017

I was married to Dr. Bhatia for over twenty-five years. The road toward being
Founder of North Houston Cardiology Center was not an easy one. He started his practice in 1979. He worked alone night and day for five years while I did insurance papers at night when I put our two babies to sleep. They were difficult times as there was discrimination in 1979. Despite that we believed in his ability and know that sooner or later his excellence would be noticed. And, it was. He was a profound doctor and many patients will
always be grateful for his ability to send them home to live on for many years.
Many young co-workers will also remember him because of his inspiration
to their future.

"Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me be.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

You will be always loved and remembered by so many lives that you have
touched.
