Harriett Goodman Obituary

Harriett Shearer Goodman died peacefully at home on the 25th of August 2013. She was born on the 29th of April 1928 in Houston, to Robert and Elba Shearer.
She graduated from Lamar High School in 1945 and the University of Houston in 1949.
She was married to Harold V. Goodman in 1950, and lived her entire life in Houston, where she raised her four children. In addition to raising her family, she was involved as a community volunteer including serving as president of the Houston Assistance League. And, with her good friend Sara White she operated a gift basket business, Bountiful Baskets, for many years.
Harriett was a loyal and fun friend to many, especially her poker and bridge groups, and the Hot Chicks, who faithfully supported the Houston livestock show for many years.
Harriett also enjoyed extensive travel and adventure.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Gerald R. Shearer; and Lowell Collins, her companion of many years, and she is survived by her children, Meg Goodman and her husband Mike Bonini, Betsy Abell and her husband Hughes Abell, Greg Goodman and his wife Becky Goodman, and John Goodman; former daughter-in-law, Carroll Goodman; and her grandchildren, Bailey McCarthy and her husband Pete Mc Carthy, Lucy Abell, Sam Abell, Hutton Goodman, Hannah Goodman, Mary Jane Goodman, Bo Goodman, Betsy Goodman, and John Goodman, Jr.; and her great granddaughter, Grace McCarthy.
The family is grateful for the devoted care giving attention of Lottie Chatman, Elizabeth A. Edwards, Elizabeth B. Edwards, Vivian Jones, and Rosana Arris. The family is also appreciative of the tireless assistance of Cheryl Denniss.
In addition, gratitude goes to Houston Hospice and the compassionate Liz's Angel of Care Staffing.
The memorial service is to be conducted at noon on Wednesday, the 28th of August, in the chapel at the Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where the Rev. Dr. Laurens A. Hall, Rector, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held at a venue to be announced during the services.
Prior to the service, the family is to gather for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in Harriett's memory may be directed to Texas Children's Hospital, 6621 Fannin St., Houston, TX, 77030; or to the charity of one's choice.

So so sad to hear about your mother's death. I started working for the Goodman family (Harold) in 1966 and that was during the best years of my life. Much later I worked wih Harriett at Bountiful Baskets and it was so much fun. She was such a joy to be around. I am very sorry I missed the service (I was out of town for a death in my family) and just heard today. My thoughts and prayers are with you - Meg Betsy Greg John and families. She was amazing. My love to all of you.

Harriett was like a mother to everyone who was a friend of the Goodman family. I am proud to have been a part of that special group and every time I think about all of you I smile. Thank you for sharing your lives and Harriett with all of us!
