Henry J. N. Taub

HENRY J. N. TAUB, age 85, passed away Thursday morning, the 1st of April 2004, in Houston. A native Houstonian, Mr. Taub received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston and attended the Harvard Business School under naval auspices. During World War II, he served overseas with the Seabees and retired from the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. Following the war, Mr. Taub worked with Mr. Ben Taub in managing the family business, J. N. Taub & Sons. In 1982, he became the owner and president of several Ben Taub business enterprises; in addition, he founded and operated several other entities. Active in other realms of commerce, Mr. Taub also served on the Board of Directors of the American General Corporation, First City National Bank, the ROMO Corporation of Colorado, and he was a founding director of Benjamin Franklin Savings and Loan. Known as an active philanthropist and humanitarian, Mr. Taub was particularly interested in causes that supported children and medicine. He continued his family's deep-rooted tradition of philanthropic activities in the community and generously supported numerous charitable organizations, various institutions of higher education, hospitals, libraries, parks initiatives, religious institutions, and a myriad of other causes. As exemplified by his extended tenures on various boards, Mr. Taub was known for his sense of loyalty, duty, and service. Mr. Taub served as an Executive Committee member and as a trustee for over thirty-five years with the Baylor College of Medicine. At The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR), Mr. Taub served for over twenty years as a trustee. At the University of St. Thomas, he served for twelve years on their board. He served as Vice Chairman and a board member of St. John's School for fourteen years. Mr. Taub served on the board of The Methodist Hospital for forty years and he was a member of their Executive Committee as well. Taking a personal interest with his commitment to the various foundations, he served as either president or trustee on the boards of the Baylor Medical Foundation, the Blue Bird Foundation, the Taub Foundation, the DeBakey Medical Foundation, the Pauline Sterne Wolff Memorial Foundation, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders of Texas Foundation, and several others. Mr. Taub was proud to serve with a variety of other organizations. He served on the State Bar of Texas District 4-C Grievance Committee and the Appellate Judiciary Committee. He was a life member of the Navy League of the United States - Houston Council, an advisor to the 100 Club of Houston, an Honorary Ranger with Company "A" of the Texas Rangers, a life trustee of the DePelchin Children's Center, an Executive Committee member and Chairman of the Board at the YMCA's Downtown Branch, a board member and an Executive Committee member of the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and a trustee with the Armand Bayou Nature Center, Inc. Mr. Taub was predeceased by wife, Carol Ellen Joseloff Taub; uncle, Mr. Ben Taub; and brother, John B. Taub. He is survived by his children; H. Ben Taub, Marcy Taub Wessel and husband, Thomas, Henry J. N. Taub, II; and grandson, Henry Taub Wessel. The Funeral Service will be conducted at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon, the 4th of April 2004, at Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 North Braeswood Boulevard in Houston, with Rabbi Samuel E. A private entombment will follow in the Temple of Rest Mausoleum at Beth Israel Cemetery at West Dallas, 1207 West Dallas Street in Houston.
