Herbert Laster Obituary

Herbert Kendall Laster, 82, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2008. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee on March 15, 1925. He left high school during his senior year to enlist in the Army Air Corp. He was sent to Ellington Air Force base in Houston to be trained as a navigator. During this time, he met Elaine Sherfy who in 1946 would become his wife. He was stationed in England during the Second World War. After receiving an honorable discharge, he and new wife Elaine moved to Atlanta in order that he might pursue his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech. Kendall's career included work in Houston at Cameron Oil, Mission Manufacturing, and Baker Oil Tool. He was a member and former president of Texas ASME. After retirement, he supported Elaine in her World Book business. Elaine preceded him in death in 2006. He is survived by sons Bryan Laster and Richard Laster along with daughter-in-law Susan and three grandchildren: Stephanie Forbis and husband Jack, Ryan and fiancée Marisa Meyer, and Stephen. Kendall and Elaine were active members of St. Philip's United Methodist Church. Kendall was a gentleman whom many described as one with a unique quality of kindness along with a genuine sweet spirit. The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, February 12th, 2008 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Waltrip Funeral Directors. A celebration of Herbert Kendall Laster's life will be held at St. Philip's United Methodist Church, 5501 Beechnut, on Wednesday, February 13th at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Lisa Callaway will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the church of your choice.
