In Loving Memory: Hildegardo Edmundo "Galo" Flores
1942 – 2025
Hildegardo Edmundo Flores, a beloved son, father, brother, uncle, educator, and friend, peacefully passed away on August 6, 2025, at the age of 82. His life was one of inspiration, service, and dedication, leaving behind a legacy that will forever endure.
Born in Zapata, Texas, Hildegardo-affectionately known as "Galo"-was the eldest son of the late Ofelia Garza Flores and Leonardo G. Flores, II. From a young age, he showed an extraordinary love of learning. As Salutatorian of Zapata High School, he displayed determination and curiosity that would guide him throughout his life.
Galo went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry and a Master of Science in Biochemistry and Botany from Texas A&I University–Kingsville (now Texas A&M). His studies were interrupted by the Vietnam War, where he served his country with distinction as a Chief Petty Officer, 1st Class, in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged and decorated for his heroic service.
After returning home, Hildegardo devoted more than three decades to education in the Laredo and Corpus Christi Independent School Districts. His unwavering commitment to his students, his boundless enthusiasm, and his belief in every child's potential left an indelible mark on generations of learners. His pursuit of excellence led him to earn a Doctor of Education from the University of Houston and to serve as Assistant Superintendent for Corpus Christi Independent School District, where he championed the cause of student success.
Beyond the classroom, Hildegardo poured his heart into serving his beloved community of Zapata, Texas. He founded the Zapata County Museum, led the Zapata Water District as President, and introduced innovative ideas to enrich the lives of children and families in the region.
While his professional and civic contributions were many, Hildegardo will be most remembered for his love of family. He was a devoted father and grandfather who cherished every moment with his daughters and granddaughters. His warmth, compassion, and wisdom touched all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Hildegardo is preceded in death by his loving wife, Olga M. Flores. He is survived by his children, Gabriela and Ray Irwin, and Elsa Flores and Ken Tsai, as well as his beloved granddaughters, Alexandra Irwin, Athena Tsai, and Diana Tsai. His family, students, and community will carry forward his legacy of love, education, and service.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Zapata County Museum, Zapata, TX., honoring Hildegardo's lifelong commitment to education and the community he so deeply loved.
May Hildegardo rest in peace, knowing his life's work continues to inspire future generations.
