Jack Wendt Obituary

Jack William Wendt
1923-2016
Jack William Wendt, Age 92, of Hempstead, Texas, passed away on October 26, 2016 at the VA Hospital in Houston, Texas. He was born November 27, 1923 in Hempstead, Texas to Max and Julia Wendt.
Jack lived in Hempstead, Texas all of his life, attending Hempstead High School, graduating in 1941. He participated in many activities, including playing football. Jack remained a loyal Hempstead Alumni attending football games both home and out of town games supporting his team throughout his life, while enjoying the games with family and friends.
Jack was inducted into the United States Army on February 19, 1943. He proudly served in World War II as a part of the 83rd Combat Unit for the United States Army. After three days of combat on the front lines fighting the Germans, his unit was surrounded, he was taken prisoner on July 15, 1943 in Carrington, France. He was held in France for several weeks before being sent to a prison camp in Adorf, Germany near the Czechoslovakia border, where he was held for ten months. During his capture he was assigned to work command that had to rebuild damaged railroads caused by the US bombing. He was liberated in Czechoslovakia by the United States Army on May 2, 1944, arriving home to Hempstead, Texas on June 8, 1944. After a short leave, he fulfilled his last three months of service with the Army and then began a career with the United States Post Office until his retirement.
Jack was an active member of the local Hempstead VFW Post 4007, over the years he volunteered his services in any capacity needed, most fondly known for his wonderful BBQ skills . Jack's BBQ was always in high demand and when he fired up the grill, friends and neighbors would bring him meat to cook since he cooked BBQ with such perfection.
Jack's favorite pastimes during his life were fishing, playing cards and dominoes, working in his yard, watching sports, and spending time with his family, and having coffee with friends. Jack never met a stranger and most likely he was going to make you laugh spending time with him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Max and Julia Wendt, his brothers Edmond and Raymond Wendt and his sister, Ruby Hargrave.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews, whom he has left a lasting legacy, he will be greatly missed.
Funeral Services will be held at Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at McWilliams Funeral Home, 706 Bremond Street, Hempstead, Texas.
