Jaime Viancos Obituary

Jaime G. Viancos, M.D.
12/26/1932 - 01/03/2025
Cue the music! In this case, any classical concerto will do. Jaime G. Viancos, M.D. passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025, at the grand age of 92, having just celebrated his birthday on the 26th of December.
He was the fifth of ten children born in Santiago, Chile to Gabriela née Gumucio and Raul Viancos. Jaime loved fútbol and learning as a child. He began a lifelong courtship with Sylvia Bravo as teenagers, and they married in March 1957. They welcomed their daughter, Marie, in 1958, son, Jaime, in 1960, and son, Fred, in 1962.
He graduated from University of Chile Medical School, in 1958 and served in the Chilean Navy as a physician. In 1963, he completed his residency in Anesthesiology. In 1965, he received a two-year fellowship from Michael DeBakey, M.D. who was initiating the first formal training program for Cardiovascular Surgery. After returning to Chile and realizing the great strides he had made in the United States, he brought his family back to Houston for good in 1970, where he joined the DeBakey team at Baylor College of Medicine and continued his work with those advancing open heart surgery. After many years he returned to his studies completing another anesthesia residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and entering private practice in Houston and later in McAllen. His accomplishments and honors were many, serving in leadership positions, contributing to his profession, as well as providing anesthesia to a royal, celebrities and other dignitaries, including a "mafia boss." His meticulous nature allowed him to succeed in the exacting field of anesthesia, which was his passion.
He was an avid traveler, seeing much of the world. He was proud of his children and would take the time to introduce them to anyone who was around, including all the wait staff at restaurants. After retirement, he could be seen enjoying any event or activity his grandchildren were participating in as he was always in the audience or stands. He was a man with a keen intellect and of high integrity. To summarize, his was a life well lived.
He leaves behind his bride of 67 years, Sylvia, daughter, Marie Walton (David), sons, Jaime Viancos (Tammi) and Fred Viancos (Jody), grandchildren, Katherine Chalkley (Jeff), Melissa Pasche (Clint), Matthew Walton (Ashley), Gabriela Richie (Daniel), Cooper Viancos (Kayla), Lucas Viancos and Avery Viancos, and great grandchildren Clara, Emma and Benjamin Pasche, Edward, Leo and Elena Walton, and Olivia Chalkley. He is survived by his sisters, Sofia, Gabriela, Paulina, Lucia and Patricia, and countless nieces and nephews, in Chile.
The family wishes to thank the many wonderful caregivers and nurses from Homewatch Caregivers of Sugar Land and Highland Hospice who not only made his last weeks comfortable and peaceful but also provided care and support to Sylvia.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate in support of one of his favorite charities: Casa de Esperanza, Tunnel to Towers or The Alzheimer Research Foundation.
A brief memorial service followed by a reception will be held at Settegast-Kopf Sugar Creek Funeral Home, on January 8, 2025, at 2 p.m.

Sylvia, You have my prayers and heartfelt condolences. He truly was an inspiration. Jaime surprised me when I taught classes at Keller Williams and he wanted to get his license and keep working, learning and contributing. I will always cherish the time we worked together. Once moving to Sweetgrass he was my cheerful neighbor and friend. Such a dear! He will be greatly missed in this world. God Bless your family. Hugs, Cheryl
