James Stoops Obituary

James Stoops
09/15/1937 - 10/22/2025
Dr. James King Stoops (Jim), faithful husband, father, grandfather, scientist, mentor, and friend, died peacefully at home on October 22, 2025, in Houston, Texas, with his devoted wife, Pam, by his side and under hospice care. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, on September 15, 1937, Jim lived 87 full years shaped by curiosity and a dedication to scientific inquiry, family, and understanding the beauty of the natural world.
Jim will be remembered not only for his pioneering scientific contributions but also for his stubborn brilliance, hospitality, appreciation of the natural world, bull-headed opinions, barbeque brisket, and love of garden-fresh sweet corn and fried green tomatoes. Jim was a man of persistence and precision, a determined problem-solver who believed he could repair or engineer anything. He taught his children to marvel at the natural world, value education, and confidently use power tools. Though strong-willed-and sometimes prickly like the cacti he collected-those who knew him best saw a softer side as well.
A memorial service will be held at ChristChurch Presbyterian, 5001 Bellaire Blvd, Bellaire, Texas, 77401 on November 22, 2025, at 1:00 PM, followed by a reception.
