Jeffery Babcock Obituary

Jeffery A. Babcock December 12, 1955 -
October 4, 2014
Jeffery Alan Babcock was born December 12, 1955 in Orlando, Florida. A loving husband, devoted father, and dedicated co-worker with an infectious sense of humor, which he gregariously shared with others. He was never one to take important life changing decisions too lightly or seriously, as reflected when he proposed to his wife, of 23 years, Sandi. With a penchant to become a part-time Thespian, he asked for her hand in marriage in the Laredo Little Theater, where they first met. With "Save the Last Dance for Me" playing in the background, he wooed her by saying "I've danced with many women, but chose to waltz with only one." Jeffery was a 1974 graduate of John Marshall High School, completed his bachelor degree at Texas Lutheran College in 1977, including a semester at American University in Washington D.C., and received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from St. Mary's School of Law in 1980. For over 25 years, he has worked for the Department of Justice, as an Assistant U.S. Attorney at various cities with his last assignment at the U.S. Attorney's Office Southern District of Texas in Houston. In Houston, he attended Crosspoint Lutheran Church and in San Antonio he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was an active volunteer for Pope John XXIII High School, Katy, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father, Dexter B. Babcock, Jr. Survivors include his wife, Sandra M. Babcock; son, Arthur J. Babcock; daughter, Jennifer Rodriguez (John Eric); grandchildren Lilian, James Michael and Mina; mother, Mildred L. Babcock; sisters Christine Babcock and Jo Beth Oestreich (David); brother, Robert Babcock; aunt, Dorothy Joy; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in laws. Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on October 9, 2014 at Grace Lutheran Church, 504 Avenue E, San Antonio, Texas. After the service, a light lunch reception will follow in the church's fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jeffery A. Babcock Memorial Scholarship Fund, Texas Lutheran University, 1000 W. Court St., Seguin, Texas 78155 or the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

I received a shock this morning. While clearing up boxes of photos, I came across one of Arthur at 4mos. Jeff shared it with me. Finding the photo I thought I would lookup Jeff on Google. This obituary is what I found.
Jeff was the first attorney I ever worked for. While we didn't stay in touch, I thought of him often. And Gosh he taught me so much and always encouraged me to further my career. He was the best boss. Sandy, I am so sorry that I didn't know sooner of your loss. May he rest in peace.

Sandra and Arthur,
My DEEPEST sympathies to you and your families. I knew Jeff very well from working with him on appeals to the Fifth Circuit (where I work). Jeff was even gracious enough to help me learn the streets of Houston when my job relocated there after Hurricane Katrina. It was always pleasant to deal with him. He always was happy and had a great and cheerful disposition. Sadly, he passed away on my birthday. And, before he did.. he mailed me a box of cookies that was red and heart shaped. We've never sent each other anything for our birthdays, but maybe did exchange occasional emails. He is truly special and I know WE all have an angel looking over us. Love, Mary Frances Yeager

Arthur, We just talked to Kathryn and she shared the sad news of your dad's passing. The Schmitts send our deepest sympathies to your family. The day we spent at TLU with your family meant so much to us. Your sweet dad couldn't say enough wonderful things about TLU and it was clear how proud he was of you. We greatly appreciated the time you all spent with us that day- it was truly a wonderful afternoon. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers in the difficult days and weeks ahead. God bless each of you.
Sincerely,
Tim, Mary Anne, and Kathryn Schmitt

Very saddened to learn of the passing away of Jeff--Had worked with him at the USAO in Houston for many years. From the time that I first met Jeff, I knew he was a very special individual. He had an infectious sense of humor and a wit that was unmatched. More than that, he was a person I could always confide in. My deepest condolences for your loss. I pray that God will bring you comfort during this difficult time.

Jeff and I met in July 1974 and have stayed close for over 40 years. He was the REAL DEAL - If Jeff was your friend you did not need any others: He was always there with incredible wit, intellect, kindness and love. I will miss him always and forever.

While our loss will never compare to the loss that each member of Jeff's family feels, we, his colleagues, share your heartache. The light of Jeff's ever present smile has dimmed with his loss, but our memories of that smile, his delicious sense of humor, and his extraordinary legal talent will live on in the memories we hold in our hurting hearts. May your memories of Jeff bring back the wonderful feelings of the joy with which he lived and shared with you. Perhaps as we look into our hearts and relive the memories and rejoice, with time, the pain of his loss will slowly lessen. God has blessed Jeff. May He bless all of you during this most difficult time.

Jeff was not only my colleague, he was my best friend and confidant, and I loved him. Jeff and I spent many hours talking about books, movies, history, politics and the state of the world. We shared jokes and funny stories and laughed, oh how Jeff could laugh. But mostly we talked about our children. Arthur, you were the center of his life and he loved you so much. He would always share with me your latest accomplishments and was so proud of the man you became. Sandi you were the love of his life. He was proud to call you his beloved. Jeff was a kind and generous man who shared his love, knowledge and his faith in God with friend and stranger alike. Jeff I love you, I miss you and I will see you one day when you welcome me into God's Kingdom.

If there was one thing we knew about Jeff, it was if you asked a question about anything to do with History, Work, or any subject for that matter, you better have some time on your hands. There was never a answer that you recieved that you didnt know the entire history of before you left. You will be truly missed!
