Mrs. Jewell Rebecca Simpson Houston transitioned from this life on Saturday, July 1, 2017. She was born on July 16, 1921 to parents Rev. Simon Simpson and Mrs. Pearl Green Simpson, in the parsonage at Shorter Chapel A.M.E Church, Giddings, TX. Mrs. Houston was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Mr. Melvon Houston, Sr. The family and friends will celebrate her homegoing beginning Friday, July 21, 2017, with visitation at Boyd's Funeral Directors (7411 Wheatley) from 2:00-4:30pm, wake services are from 6:00-8:00pm at Payne Chapel A.M.E. Church (2701 Lee Street). Mrs. Houston's Celebration of Life is at 1:00pm on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Payne Chapel A.M.E. Church (noon viewing). Mrs. Houston will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband at 10:00am, Monday, July 24, 2017 at the Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers & plants, the family is requesting donations in her honor: visit Boyd Funeral & search Jewell Houston.

To Barbara, Avanell and Melvon,
It´s wonderful to see how you honor your mother as she so deserves. I feel the same about my father! Mrs. Houston was a great educator and a great example of what all teachers should be! I can only imagine how she would feel about the terrible political turmoil that we are experiencing today.

Dear Avanell,Barbara and Melvon,
I am sorry I can't be with you today to celebrate your mother's life. She was my
introduction to government and what she
spoke of in the 1960's in still relevant
today,maybe even more so. She was a great
teacher;we need more like her today!
I still remember her comforting smile to my
family as she helped remove flowers and
plants from the church after the home-
going service for my father.I am sending you
that same smile.
