Joan Abramowitz Obituary

DR. JOAN ABRAMOWITZ beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many passed away on May 10th. With her beloved husband at her side, Joan faced cancer with her usual indomitable spirit, used the time she gained richly, and was an inspiration and comfort to her friends and family. Joan was born in New York on May eighth, 1949 to Seymour and Helen Scheer She received a B.S degree from Ithaca College and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from New York University. Dr. Abramowitz served for twenty years as a highly respected faculty member at the University of Houston-Downtown. She retired in 2004 due to illness with the rank of Associate Professor. Among her many contributions as a faculty member, she served as chairperson of the Microbiology Degree Program, as chairperson of the Health Professions Advisory Committee, as a member of the Faculty Senate, and was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award in 2002. As a professor, Dr. Abramowitz uniquely combined a demand for high standards and academic rigor with a nurturing, Jewish mother attitude. She worked side by side with her students in the laboratory and mentored them in finding research opportunities in the Texas Medical Center and in applications to health professions schools. She imbued her students with a love of learning and striving for excellence. Dr. Abramowitz was both a team player and a leader in her relationships with her colleagues. She was a member of the Texas Association for Microbiology and the Texas Association of Advisors for the Health Professions. She was a devoted member of Congregation Emanuel and when she was fifty-four years old, still teaching and undergoing chemotherapy she fulfilled a lifelong dream and became a Bat Mitzvah. Joan loved to have her family and her many friends around her, frequently entertaining large and small groups in her home. She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Joel Abramowitz, sons Michael Abramowitz and Carl Abramowitz, her grandson, Sebastian Abramowitz, and Sebastian's mother Brittany Walker. Her son Jesse Abramowitz preceded her in death. She is survived also by her parents, Seymour and Helen Scheer, her sister, Carol Schein and her husband Richard and their children, Audrey Stone and Leslie Lonergan, her mother-in-law Helen Abramowitz, her sister-in-law Elizabeth Jenkins and her husband, Richard and their children, Elita and Elan. Joan is survived by many friends and colleagues who will miss her deeply. Services will be held in the Santuary of Congregation Emanu El, 1500 Sunset Blvd., on Friday, May 13, 2005 at 11:00 A.M., burial at Emanu El Memorial Park Cemetery. Joel, Michael, and Carl

Doug and I are truly saddened by the loss of Joan. She was a wonderful, funny, witty, intelligent, caring, gracious, and loving person. I have been blest to have Joan as a friend and colleague for the past twenty years. She loved her family deeply and told great and funny stories about your life together. She was the "glue" of our department, a wise and insightful counselor to many of us. Our department has not been the same since she left. We will miss her terribly. We pray that God will ease your sorrow and bless your family in the days ahead.

I first meet Joan after the Houston Chronicle had run an article about my new clinic, a mobile veterinary clinic. We instantly had a connection she said because because my clinic was named after Terlingua, a place in west Texas where I had started the practice and where she had been to and loved. I became the family's veterinarian and have been taking care of their pets for several years now. As a housecall veterinarian, I have a more intimate relationship with my clients than other vets because of visting with them in their home, meeting family members, and having more time to visit with them. Therefore, some of my clients become much more than just a client. They become friends also. Maybe, not someone you talk to weekly or even monthly, but someone with whom you can just pick back up with when you do see them. I will miss seeing her and visiting with her. She was a gracious, caring, strong, vibrant woman who would matter-of-factly talk about her illness, but would never complain. I was always very impressed with her devotion to her family - she obviously cared very deeply for them all. I am grateful for having the opportunity to get to know her and am deeply saddened by her death. I know she will be missed by many, and I am a member of that crowd.

I did not know Dr. Joan Abramowitz but I knew her husband since he was my mom, Louise Klovenski's doctor. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time. Every day gets just a little easier and knowing they are not going through the pain and suffering is such a blessing.

Weep not for me

now that I have passed.

Remember the laughter, the affection, the joy

not just the recent tears.

Cherish the memories, our hopes and dreams.

Hold fast to the love that we shared.

Be happy with the time we spent together

and being anew.

For I am not really gone,

I am closer than ever before.

As the morning sun rises

and throughout the busy day...I am with you.

Until the setting sun disappears on the horizon

and we watch the day turn into night...I am here.

You may feel a faint breeze stir round your head, while you slumber

as I gently kiss your forehead, "Good night."

The stars that shine so brightly in my heavenly sky

help me watch over you and keep you from harm.

I am the wind in the trees

and the song of a bird.

I am moonbeams in a midnight sky

and a glorious rainbow after the storm.

I am morning dew

and freshly-fallen snow.

I am a butterfly flying overhead

and a puppy happily at play.

I am a smile on a stranger's face

a gentle touch

a warm embrace.

Listen to the wind for my message of love.

Watch the sun rise and set in the sky with me.

Feel my essence encircle you with warm memories.

Open your heart to know...I am not gone.

Reach deep into your soul...You will find me.

I am here.

Have no fear.

I am with you,

Always
