JOE REYNOLDS Obituary

"If I had more than one life to live, I'd live every one as a lawyer in Houston, Texas."JOE HUNTER REYNOLDS,age 88, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died on Saturday, the 19th of December 2009, of natural causes. Joe is survived by his loving wife Sue Stamper Reynolds, whom he married on the 17th of July 1948, and they spent more than 61 wonderful years together.Joe was born on the 21st of November 1921, in Commerce, Texas, one of six children born to John Gordon Reynolds and Espie Duke Reynolds. Joe grew up in Tyler and graduated from Waco High School. He worked his way through Tyler Junior College, Baylor University, and Baylor Law School.Following the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Joe enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. In 1945, Lt. Reynolds landed on Iwo Jima, and during fierce fighting Joe was seriously wounded. Joe watched as the American flag was raised atop Mount Suribachi. Most Americans have seen that famous photo. Joe saw it live. Joe received the Purple Heart and numerous other medals for his military valor. In 1950, Joe was called back to serve in the Korean War. Captain Reynolds landed at Inchon and later fought at the Battle of the Chosin River, called the "Frozen Chosin." Joe suffered severe frostbite and other injuries, was hospitalized for many months, and for his service Joe was awarded the Commendation Ribbon with Combat V. The Commandant General of the Marine Corps has called the Battles of Iwo Jima and the Chosin Reservoir two of the bloodiest battles in Marines Corps history. Joe was one of the last survivors of both of those historic battles. Joe was a true hero, although he always denied it.Joe graduated from Baylor Law School and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1947. Joe first served in the trial division of the Texas Attorney General's office, representing the Texas Highway Department in antitrust cases, and he opposed Thurgood Marshall in the landmark case of Sweatt v. Painter. Joe was widely regarded as one of the greatest trial lawyers of the last 60 years, and he was recently named a "Texas Legal Legend" by the State Bar of Texas.Returning to Houston, Joe practiced law the rest of his life, first with the firm of Bracewell, Reynolds & Patterson (now Bracewell & Guiliani). In 1967 Joe formed Reynolds, White, Allen & Cook and successor firms. During his later years he served in an Of Counsel position with Andrews & Kurth and finally with Schwartz Junell Greenberg & Oathout. In 1972, Gov. Preston Smith appointed Joe as a Regent at Texas A&M University. Joe served as a Regent for 16 years, having been appointed by three different governors. In Joe's honor, the medical school at Texas A&M is housed in the Joe H. Reynolds Medical Building. Joe organized the Board of Visitors of Texas Southern University School of Law and served on its board for ten years.A Biblical scholar, one of Joe's great loves was teaching his Sunday School class at Second Baptist Church, the "Nothing But the Truth" Class. Joe began every lesson with a quote from Romans 1:17: "I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God until salvation to all those who believeth, to the Jew first, and then to the Gentile." Joe's faith was limitless and his love for others reflected his deep love of God and Jesus Christ. He expressed his Christian love for others daily by his words and deeds.Joe is also survived by his sons, Hunt Reynolds and wife Laura of Houston and Dan Reynolds and wife Nancy of Brenham; grandchildren, Jennifer Reynolds McEwan and husband John of Austin, Clay Reynolds and Danielle Reynolds of Brenham, and Lisa and Kent White of San Antonio. He is survived by great-grandsons, William McEwan and Charles McEwan of Austin. He was predeceased by his sister, the late Dorace Reynolds and brothers, the late Johnny Reynolds of Dallas, Earl Reynolds of Houston, and William Reynolds of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Joe is also survived by several nieces and nephews.Joe was not only a great patriot, but also a teacher, mentor, and loyal friend to both the powerful and the powerless. His generosity was legendary. He had a heart of service, and his love knew no bounds. Few have impacted as many as Joe. All who knew him knew that they were in the presence of a unique combination of goodness and greatness.Joe would tell each of us at this time the words one Marine says to another just before an amphibious landing: "I'll see you on the beach."Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening on Monday, the 21st of December, in the Library of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. The interment service, with military honors, is to be conducted at half-past nine o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 22nd of December, at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road in Houston. A uniformed steward from Geo. H. Lewis & Sons is to be positioned at the cemetery's entrance so as to guide guests to the interment site. The memorial service, to celebrate Joe's life, is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning, also on Tuesday, the 22nd of December, in the Sanctuary of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston.Immediately following the service, the family is to receive friends during a reception in the Deacons' Parlor. For those desiring, contributions in memory of Joe Reynolds may be directed to Boys and Girls Country of Houston, 18806 Roberts Rd., Hockley, TX, 77447. -->

I miss you Joe Reynolds! Your spirit reminds me every day how much I have to keep loving people no matter who betrays my life. I am so grateful to have you and Susie Reynolds as loving friends who treated me like family. I was so blessed to know you. I pray one day soon to be with my significant other who died of brain cancer in heaven. The man you did business with has been in heaven for 4 years and that is Attorney James Nasos Mancuso. He was my only true love. I lost my daughter,Madeline Elizabeth Holt Bourland, to. Your memory is part of me every time I walk in church. I remember you saying never to ashamed of talking about our heavenly father. It makes me realize that are genuine people in this ugly world. That was you, Attorney Joe Reynolds. Attorney, Joe Reynolds, was a a friend, a grandfather, and the best teacher of Lords word at Second Baptist Sunday School in Houston, Texas. A very big tree has fallen in the forest. Joe Reynolds projected more positive energy and personal integrity than anyone i've ever known. He had a sincere interest in people that made each one better for his love of them. I don't quite believe in idols, but Joe Reynolds comes close if i did. Well done thy good and faithful servant. You will reap all of the rewards for the love you sowed among us here on earth.

Joe was an inspiration for the 4th of July celebrations at Second Baptist Church. When we included the Marine flag raising on Iwo Jima, he helped us get it right. Semper Fi Marine.

A hero to so many that he fought for in the halls of justice, an American hero who fought for our freedom.

I was professionally acquainted with Mr. Reynolds and had the ultimate honor of visiting with him last year. A friend arranged the visit with me, Mr. Reynolds and my son (USMC 2002 - present), who was leaving for Afghanistan. I had no idea of Mr. Reynold's outstanding service to our country as a Marine until that visit. To be in the presence of such an outstanding Marine was so humbling.

The gates of heaven are well guarded with Mr. Reynolds, my Dad, and our other Marines.

Joe's life included many fine Quarter Horses. We were pleased to learn this great man not only sat a saddle well but could pick the winner in a show ring. I cared for his stable in Brenham many years. The fond memories of Joe, Susie, Dan, and pet Bud arriving at Pleasant Hill Farm was the highlight of the week. Joe has ridden on up the trail now. Can't you see his hat rimmed by a bright and shining halo, his buckle reads Saint Joe, and his spurs jingle "Peace In The Valley".

"Mr Reynolds" was a mentor but moreso an example for all of us who wished to practice law, especially in the court room setting. I do not know anyone who was so proud of being an attorney, who did it so well, who enjoyed it so much for so long and who taught so many of us what a privilege it is to be in the profession.

Daddy Joe was a great "man" among "men"! I met him when I started working for Michael Stevens. I admired Michael for his
high integrity, stong leadership and faith in the Lord. Once I met Daddy Joe and I got to know him, I realized how much of an influenced Daddy Joe had on Michael becoming the man he was. Daddy Joe's love flowed over to so many. He made me feel like part of his family. I loved him and will miss him. I know he is with many of his friends in the Lord's presence (resting on the beach). God Bless you Mama Sue.

I first met Mr. Reynolds in 1995, even before I moved to Houston. What a wonderful person he was! It was a privilege to know him and to call him friend. I have never met a finer, more honorable person and doubt I ever will. My deepest sympathy to the family on their loss. We can be comforted by knowing that Mr. Reynolds is spending this Christmas and Eternity with Jesus.

Joe Reynolds' was a significant life. Not only did he contribute greatly to the jurisprudence of this State as a brilliant lawyer; he contributed greatly to the character of this State by his example to and his encouragement of others.
Hundreds of other lawyers will join me in saying that Joe loved us more than anyone else (we each thought we were the only only he found so smart and special!). He found a way to inspire and encourage better things from us than we thought we were capable of. Joe Reynolds was a modern-day Barnabus. We became better lawyers and people because he thought it possible.
His was a life well-lived. I miss him.

My heart is saddened to hear of the loss of Joe ... truly "one-of-a-kind". Joe and my Dad were in the Marines together -- Joe was my Dad's Lt. -- and Dad always said that there was never a better man than Joe Reynolds. I shall treasure the memories I have of Joe ... my life was made better by knowing Joe and being the recipient of his unconditional love. Whenever we met, he always gave me a big hug and kiss; and his last words when we parted were "I love you". My life is definitely better for having known this wonderful man. May God bless you, Joe ... and I hope you and Dad are catching up on things now that you have "met on the beach".

Dear Hunt,
I am saddened to hear of the loss of your dad. From his coaching us on the Owls in the mid 50's to his moving eulogy at Mike's service, the more I learned about your father, the more I realized what a truly remarkable man he was...and what an exemplary Christian. True to his humble nature, I didn't realize until now the degree to which he honorably and courageously served his country, but it is not all that surprizing given the man. I have know many attorneys who have served under him and to a person, each has volunteered genuine and glowing praises whenever his name was mentioned. Please convey my deepest sympathies to your mother and the rest of your family and know my heartfelt thoughts & prayers are with you now and in the difficult days ahead.

Joe is truly one-of-a-kind. He was my parents mentor and dear friend. He had a way of making everyone feel special. He had a brilliant mind and exuded God's love in all he did and said. What a legacy he has left for his family! My mom and I will miss him greatly but are thrilled with the knowledge that he will be reunited with my dad and husband in heaven! My life is better just for knowing this man. God bless you Joe! Your shoes can never be filled. "See you on the beach!"

I met Joe the night he died. What a profound impact he made on me. I cannot describe adequately enough how welcome he made me feel in a room full of strangers. It seemed by his acceptance of me, as a fellow Marine, that the entire class found a soft spot for the new kid in town. Joe made me feel so important by devoting deliberate time, in the midst of a crowd, to get to know me. He told me the stories first hand of the “Frozen Chosin”, and meeting a friend on the beach at Iwo Jima. The last words he said to me personally were “This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship”.

I have lost a true hero today. From the day I first met Joe twenty five years ago, he was like a father to me. Every time we spoke it lifted my heart to speak of our love of our Marine Corps, our Lord and each other. A light has gone out in my life that will never be replaced.

Joe was a wonderful man and a living legend. It was my honor to get to know him. He was a great friend to my parents and always made everyone feel welcome in his presence. My husband & I enjoyed coming to the Sunday School class with my parents to hear Joe's tremendous words of wisdom. My husband really felt a special connection with Joe because of working in the Texas Atty General's office and serving in the military...that means the world to me that such a man of God could relate to so many people on such a personable level. I know that God welcomed you into the Kingdom with His arms open wide saying, "Well done my good and faithful servant! Thank you God for allowing us to share time with a man who love You so much! Thank you Reynolds family for sharing your husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle with all of us for so many years. God Bless!

December 20, 2009

December 20, 2009

I first met Joe in early 1961 when his then five or six man law firm contacted me to offer employment. I had already committed to another position but I was tremendously impressed by the man I knew then as "Mr. Reynolds." Through the years I became a very close friend and admirer of this great man. I do not use the term "great" in characterizing Joe because he is now gone. He was truly one of the most kind, loving and inspirational persons I have met in my lifetime. War hero, trial lawyer without peer, mentor, friend and counselor-he was all of these things and more. His passing is a loss that cannot be adequately measured.

Joe Reynolds was my hero! He represented my family in court when I was only 11, fighting to use the medical treatment I needed. He won our case and he truly saved my life. Our relationship turned into a grandpa/grandaughter bond after that! I will love you forever, "Daddy Joe!" I will miss you so much. I will always thank God for you and everything you gave back to me! I am confident I wouldn't be here today without you. I love you and Mama Sue so much!

Joe has been our Sunday School teacher at Second Baptist and friend for many years. We are honored to have known him and will miss him greatly. Joe always opened our class with Romans 1:16 “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ . . . “ and he was a perfect example of that verse. Unconditional love and honor are two of the best words I could use to describe him. We have lost a good friend, wonderful teacher and a true hero! We love you and will miss you, Joe! Joe and I shared a birth date and an abiding love and respect for one another. He was my mentor, as he was to countless others, and we all weep at his passing. One of my proudest achievements is being Joe’s “first woman law partner.” Joe, you are my Atticus Finch. I shall miss you -- forever.

For those of us who worked for and with him during our careers as lawyers he will always be loved and remembered as a legendary officer of the court. There was and is no one to be measured against Joe Reynolds the man and Joe Reynolds the courtroom counselor. But those who knew and loved him have and will seek to emulate as much of his personal and professional character as we can because he was always in every way of the highest order. God in His wisdom blessed us greatly with the life of Joe Reynolds. Thank you Father for that gift of him to us and for the many blessings of what he did for You when he did it for so many of those he touched, myself included.

December 20, 2009

Joe was a man of great faith and a man unafraid to tell you that he loved you in the Lord's love. Joe loved as Jesus loved! He would look me straight in the eye and he would say "I love you Emmitt, come back and visit us in the Nothing But the Truth Bible Class;" and you knew he meant it. An encourager of unlimited outreach, he was forever telling others how great they were. I know that a large group of Marines and hundreds of other friends that graduated this Earth prior are having a great homecoming meeting with Joe in the vast convention halls of Heaven. In the Lord's timing, where a minute is like 10,000 years i have this final earthly word for Joe, "See you in a minute my good and faithful friend." Emmitt J. Nelson

One of the greatest men I ever met. A generous and kind friend. The quietest and greatest of real hero in an age of tinsel. It is a much more empty world without him. I will deeply miss him but I know he is with God free of the infirmities of age and surrounded by old friends--- many of whom haven't seen him for a long time. Put in a good word for us old friend. "Sleep on brave wise-hearted man. To live on in mankind is far more than to live in a name."

December 20, 2009

One of the greatest men I ever knew. I have certainly lost a wonderful and generous friend.. The World is much emptier without him but I know he is in God's hands free of age's infirmities and reunited with many old friends happy to see him. "Sleep on brave wise-hearted man. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mr. Reynolds death. He was a dear friend.I will miss him greatly. We had many scriptural discussions over the years. He would say to me that he would see me on the beach. And I look forward to that time when we walk together along that beach. John 5:28,29 was one of our favorite scriptures "All those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out"

Joe Reynolds was my uncle and I am so very proud and honored to have called him that. We would visit periodically on the phone and email and it was always a pleasure to talk to him. I shall miss him very much. I can still hear his voice when he asked me to come down for a visit and I never made it around to doing so. I loved him very much. He was the last of that Reynolds generation so his sons and grandsons will be carrying that torch now. I will miss you very much Uncle Joe.

Farewell my dearest friend! I, too will see you on the beach! It was one of the true honors of my life that you shared your friendship with me. Your last words to me as I left were " I love you!"
