John Earl Curry

John Earl Curry, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away at home in Atlanta, Georgia on December 22, 2024 after a brief battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born May 14, 1939 in Galveston, Texas to Marjorie and Don Curry and was raised by his grandmother Margaret Sealy Burton and his Aunt and Uncle Caroline Burton and Clayton Claassen.
John graduated high school from the Menlo School in Atherton, California, attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and graduated from the University of Texas, Austin. While at university John served in the Marine Corps, and after graduating was in the Naval Reserves.
John worked for the Port of Galveston and then moved to Houston, Texas, where he worked in sales and leasing for the General American Transportation Corporation (GATX). While on a blind date, John met and fell in love with Margie Griswold Curry. They were married on May 1st, 1965 at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston.
In 1980, John was asked to open an office for GATX in Atlanta, Georgia, which is where his family settled. In Atlanta, he continued to work for GATX and enjoyed volunteering at several PGA tours at the Atlanta Athletic Club, as well as regularly attending many Masters Tournaments in Augusta, Georgia.
Family was most important to John, and he was blessed with an extensive, tight-knit family of cousins who were more like siblings to him. He was known as "Johnny Cake", "Mi Primo" and "Pops" and will be remembered for his sense of humor, genuine spirit, and love of traveling, hunting, fishing, golf and tennis.
John was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Margie Griswold Curry, and his brother, Claude Curry; he is survived by his daughter, Marci Curry Hamilton (and husband Carlos); sons John Scott Curry (and wife Amy) and David Griswold Curry (and wife Jennifer); his seven grandchildren, Madeleine, Grace and Frances Hamilton; Brooks and Peyton Curry; and Woods and Chase Curry; and his brother in law Don Griswold, Jr. (and wife Marianne) and nephews Bob Griswold (and wife Amy) and Chris Griswold (and wife Tristan).
The family wants to thank his caregivers, Tina, Regina and Mary from Live Oak Caregivers, as well as his hospice nurse Vicki from Trinity Hospice Care of Georgia for lovingly taking care of him.
The family will have a private funeral at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, Georgia on January 4, 2025. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charitable cause of your choice.
