John Lewis. Obituary

John Lewis. Sr.
05/04/1936 - 05/15/2025
John Lewis, Sr., 89
A Life of Legacy, Faith, and Storytelling
John Lewis, Sr. of Houston, TX, passed away on May 15, 2025. He was 89. A man of deep faith, gentle strength, and devotion to family, John lived a life grounded in history and love.
He was born May 4, 1936, in Maurice, Louisiana, to George and Louisa Jeanlouis. The fifth of six children, John's life reflected the resilience of his Creole heritage.
In 1946, he moved to Houston's French Town and enrolled in Our Mother of Mercy School, speaking only Creole. With support from the Holy Family Sisters and a lifelong friend, Harold Chevalier, he overcame barriers and excelled in school.
John atteded Booker T. Washington High School, and in 1955 joined the U.S. Navy with Harold, serving proudly.
He later earned a degree from Texas Southern University in 1970 and spent over 42 years of continuous service in government, retiring from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as a Claims Rating Specialist, advocating for fellow veterans.
John was married to Georgia Mae Taylor Lewis for 61 years. He is survived by Georgia and their children: John Jr. (Patrice), Jason, and Jennifer (Derrick Cooksey); grandchildren Trevor (Caitlyn), Taylor, Joshua, Sydney, Lauren, Benjamin, and Dylan; and great-grandchildren Blaze and River Rose.
John will be remembered for his storytelling, quiet leadership, and unwavering love.
Funeral Mass: Tues, May 27, 10 a.m., Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, 4000 Sumpter St.
Burial: 12:30 p.m., Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Repast: Saint Monica Catholic Church.

I am happy you are not in pain any more. I hated to see you in so much pain. You never complained, just a little pain you would say but I knew better. I love you so much and I will miss you. Lynn

I'm happy you are at peace God Dad! You showed us all incredible love and affection, and your wisdom will be greatly missed. You were one of my absolute favorite people in the world to talk to and I am a better man due to your influence. God Bless you and may you continue to pray for us in the company of the Almighty surrounded by all the family and close friends that you have now joined in heaven. To Aunt Georgia, Monk, Jason, Jennifer, and all the grands and great grands, don't hesitate to lean on us if ever you need. Love you Uncle John!
