John Stallworth Obituary

JOHN LANE STALLWORTH May 2, 1914 July 20, 2006 The Stallworth Family is saddened to announce the death of its patriarch. John Lane Stallworth died on Thursday, July 20, 2006 at the age of 92. Born May 2, 1914 in Warrington, Florida to Laurence Lee and Coralie Stallworth, John was preceded in death by his parents during his childhood. He then moved, together with his brothers Tom and Carl, to Houston, Texas where he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Bea and Lee Cook. He would remain a Houstonian for 78 years until the time of his passing. A graduate of John H. Reagan High School, Mr. Stallworth began work as a machine operator for Reed Roller Bit Company. While working, he attended night classes at the University of Houston. After earning an Associate's Degree in Drafting Technology, Mr. Stallworth advanced to the position of Machinery Designer. He retired from the company after 48 years of service. John was also a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and several professional engineering organizations. Additionally, he was recently recognized by the fraternal organization, Sons of Hermann, as its oldest member. On February 29, 1936, John wed his sweetheart, Helen "Tootie" Elizabeth O'Leary. Together they had two sons--John Raymond and Darrell Lane. As he was affectionately called by his family, "Papa" or "Pops" was devoted to his wife and children, and later, to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family was his priority and he was our blessing. Pops shared with us his faith, the virtue of pride in one's work, the art of craftsmanship and skill of carpentry, a passion for sports, his sense of humor, the ability to save for a rainy day, and, most importantly, an undying commitment to his marriage. Until the time of his death, he remained an active participant in all of our lives. We will strive to sustain his legacy, passing on his love and teachings to our children for generations to come. John is survived by his wife of 70 years, Helen Elizabeth Stallworth; brother Carl Stallworth; sons John Raymond Stallworth and wife Dana, and Darrell Lane Stallworth and wife Kathleen; grandsons Stephen Stallworth and Gregory Stallworth, both of Houston; grandson Christian Lane Stallworth, M.D. and wife Jenny of San Antonio; grandson Nathan John Stallworth of San Antonio; grandson Kyle Hansen Stallworth of Houston; granddaughter Taylor Alexis Stallworth of Austin; great-grandchildren McKenna, Lane, Aspen, & Jackson Stallworth of San Antonio; sister-in-law Cleo Congrady of Alvin; and many cousins. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 23rd from 6-9 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4419 N. Main St, Houston, TX 77009, (713) 869-1449. A Rosary Service will begin at 7: 00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, July 24th at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 3502 N. Main @ I-45. Pallbearers are Stephen Stallworth, Greg Stallworth, Christian Stallworth, Nathan Stallworth, David Stallworth and Humphrey Hughes. In lieu of flowers, the Stallworth Family requests charitable contributions made in John's honor to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas 77030-4123, (713) 467-7423 or to The Brookwood Community, 1752 FM 1489, Brookshire, Texas 77423, (281) 375-2100.
