Joseph Putman Obituary

JOSEPH GROVER PUTMAN III, son of Joseph Grover Putman II and Emma Lois (Powell) Putman passed away Friday, July 4th, after a brief battle with cancer and pneumonia. He was born March 26th, 1934, in Ovilla, Texas and grew up in Waxahachie, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington, where he received his associate science degree in 1953. He went on to receive his bachelor of arts degree in Geology in 1958 from Texas Tech. He married Mary Ann Munn of Lubbock, Texas July 27th, 1956. He worked first as a trainee computer seismologist with Precision Exploration Company from 1960 to 1962, then with G.J. Long and Associates as a geologist-in-training from 1962 to 1964. He then joined Dan J. Harrison, Jr. as Exploration and Exploitation Geologist from 1964 to 1967. He worked as Area Chief Geophysicist with Transocean Oil from 1967 to 1973. In that year he joined Corpus Christi Oil & Gas Company, as Chief Geophysicist - Offshore where he was directly involved in locating several productive offshore oil and gas fields, including the famous El Gordo field, which was discovered in 1976. Corpus Christi was acquired by PG&E and shortly thereafter he left to serve as Exploration Manager with American Coastal Energy from 1994 until he retired. In addition to his work he enjoyed tennis, Texas history, especially the Republic of Texas period, boating, and spending time with his family. He was an active member of John Wesley United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Ann, son Joseph Grover Putman IV and wife Louise, son John Neil and wife Rachel. He is the proud grandfather of John Neil and Rachels child Cooper Cole Putman. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 PM Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at John Wesley United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Klein Funeral Home at Champion Forest, 16131 Champion Forest Dr., Klein, TX 77379.
