Julia Dabney Obituary

JULIA VINSON DABNEY, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, died on the 29th of November 2008. A native Houstonian, she was born at home on the 15th of July 1913, to Ethel Turner and William Ashton Vinson. She attended The Kinkaid School, Central High School (San Jacinto High School) and Rice Institute (now University), graduating in 1934. While at Rice, she was a member of the Elizabeth Baldwin Literary Society. Julia was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Houston singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and serving on the Flower Guild. She received the Life Membership award from the Women in the Church for her service to the church. She was also a member of the Junior League of Houston and the River Oaks Garden Club. She took great delight in the accomplishments of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and husband, Charles W. Dabney, Jr., as well as her sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and J. Griffith Lawhon and Martha and Dean Emerson. Survivors include her children Elizabeth and Ernest Charles, Anne and John Moriniere, Charles and Judy Dabney; her grandchildren David and Kimball Moriniere, William and Julie Dabney, Andrew Dabney, all of Houston, Dabney and Eric Moxham of New Canaan CT; her great-grandchildren Catherine and Frances Moriniere and Blake Moxham; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank her doctor, John Gallagher, and her caregivers, Hilda West, Annette Bosley, Mary Dukes, Martha Green, Lucy Guillory, and Ashlie Robinson, for their loving and compassionate care of their mother. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six until eight o'clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 3rd of December, in the Drawing Room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Private graveside services will be conducted at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale Avenue in Houston. The memorial service will be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 4th of December, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street in Houston. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Andrew Dabney, William Dabney, David Moriniere, and Eric Moxham. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Flower Guild, First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77004; Virginia Vinson Lawhon Education Fund, Bayou Bend Gardens Endowment, P. O. Box 6826, Houston, Texas 77265-6826; or to a charity of choice.
