Larry and his beloved wife Dr. Alice Gates had returned the previous day from an extended trip in Africa - one of many adventurous travels they enjoyed in recent years. This and their common love of sailing their yacht "Electron" were two of many things they shared. An avid sailboat racer, Dr. Kevan was a proud member of the Level 70 racing class and GBCA (Galveston Bay Cruising Association). He was a supporter of the arts, a patron of the Houston Ballet, and active member of the Houston chapter of the American Institute of Wine and Food. A 1960 graduate of the University of Kansas, he earned his Ph.D. at the University of California at Los Angeles and did Postdoctoral work at the University of Newcastle in England. Dr. Kevan taught at the University of Chicago, University of Kansas and Wayne State University prior to joining the UofH Chemistry Department in 1980. In addition to Alice, he is survived by his mother Myrtle Kevan, of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, sister Barbara Elliott, of Overland Park, Kansas, and his son Scott Kevan, of Los Angeles, California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be sent to the American Heart Association and the Houston Ballet. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 7 in the chapel of The Settegast-Kopf Co., 3320 Kirby Drive. The family will receive friends at home following the service.

I was a post-doctoral fellow in Larry's group from 1984 to 1986. The first time I left the UK. It was one of the most enjoyable times I have had during my scientific career. The group was dynamic and friendly, a tone set by Larry himself who would always work as hard as he would play. Much of what I learnt during that period in Houston I still use in my work today. Also, the times spent on his yacht were a delight and a privilege. I know he will be missed greatly by all those who knew him in the scientific community. He was a very kind scientist.

The sailing community has experienced a great loss with Larry's passing. As a fellow Level 70 racer, I can say the bay waters will never be the same without seeing Larry behind the wheel of Electron. He was a very kind man who never had a bad thing to say. He always had a smile on his face and always made a point to say Hi. I take great comfort in knowing that Galveston Bay has a guardian angel watching over us.

Forever in our thoguhts and prayers,

Traci & Kevin Hayes

I was so fortunate that Larry invited me to crew on his boat during a regatta, which I ultimately met my husband. The sailing community will miss Larry very much.

Very sorry to hear of Dr. Kevan's passing. I had the pleasure of working with Larry on several assignments at UH and had the pleasure of sailing with him in Clear Lake once during a regatta. He will be missed by all in the UH community.
