Lera van Eys Obituary

LERA CATHERINE VAN EYS age 71, October 2, 2003. Survived by husband, Jan van Eys; son, J. Peter van Eys (Patti); daughter, D. Catherine Fuchs (Howard); grandsons, Christian and Paul Fuchs and David and Dane van Eys; aunt, Sarah Grigsby (Glenn); numerous nieces and cousins. She was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and earned a Masters degree in special education from Peabody College. She dedicated her life to teaching special children in Nashville and later in Houston, Texas, where she was supervisor of the Oral Deaf Program for the Houston Independent School District. She supported and was a member of many organizations: the Browning Club, Friends of Cheekwood, Tennessee Hemophilla and Bleeding Disorders Foundation, High Hopes, Houston Assoication for Communication Disorders, the Opera Guild, Nashville Academy of Medicine Alliance and the Vanderbilt Sewing Club among many others. She was an officer in many of the organizations listed. Funeral services will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2003 with the Reverends Durward McCord, Pamela Hawkins and Joan Wooden officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday Evening from 7-9 and Sunday Afternoon from 3-5 p.m. at Roesch Patton funeral home and one hour prior to the funeral service at Calvary. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons and other grandchildren she adopted as her own. Honorary pallbearers will be Members of the Bible Class of Calvary Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN. 37203 or to the Calvary United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 3701 Hillsboro Road, Nashville, TN. 37215.
