Margaret Rowland Obituary

MARGARET L. JACOBSON CANNEY ROWLAND, 87, was born November 17, 1919 in Altoona, PA and passed away, Sunday, January 14, 2007 in Houston, TX. "Jake" received a nursing degree from Walter Reed and a Master's Degree from West Texas State University. She was a highly decorated Captain in the US Air Force where she served as a nurse on the European frontlines during WW II and was awarded the American Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal, EAME Medal and German Occupation Medal. After the war, she continued nursing and became the Director of Nursing at Northwest Texas Health Center in Amarillo, TX until she was appointed, by Governor Preston Smith, as the Executive Secretary of the State Board of Nurse Examiners in 1970 where she served until retirement. "Jake" is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Margaret Jacobson of Little Falls, MN; sister, Esther Sensenbaugh of Hagerstown, MD; children, Valorie Glass and husband, George of McAllen, TX, Patrick J. Canney of Houston, TX and Greg Canney and wife, Irma of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Lindsey Glass, Allison Glass, Christina Canney and Jeremy Canney and numerous nieces and nephews. At her request there will be no memorial service. She will be inurned with full Military Honors at Houston National Cemetery at 2:15 PM on Friday, February 9, 2007. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Austin, 3429 Executive Center Dr. Suite 100, Austin, TX 78731 (512) 461-8185.
