Martha Barrett Obituary

Martha Marjorie Wyssmann Barrett
04/17/1933 - 01/10/2026
Martha Marjorie ("Margie") Wyssmann Barrett of Houston, formerly of Spring, Texas, died on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, at 92. Born in 1933 in Alma, Missouri, she was the youngest of ten children of Martha Augusta Gerken Wyssmann and Carl Aegidius August Wyssmann.
After high school, Marjorie moved to Houston's Heights neighborhood to live with her sister Lucille and quickly embraced the city she would always call home. She was a devoted reader of the Houston Post and Chronicle and a loyal supporter of Houston sports.
Soon after arriving in Houston, she met and married William "Bill" Courteney Barrett. They settled in Spring and raised three children: Courtneye Diane, Susan Kathleen, and Steven Anthony. Marjorie considered motherhood her work. The couple divorced in 1985.
Marjorie worked at Foley's/Macy's from 1983 to 2007. After losing her son Steven in 2002, she found solace in caring for his infant daughter, Morgan, one of the great joys of Marjorie's life.
Marjorie later returned to Houston to be near her daughters. She loved nursery visits, Mercer Arboretum plant sales, fried shrimp, and caring for her beloved pets Miss Molly, Hope, and Mister. She was known for her kindness, independence, dry wit, and quiet strength.
Marjorie is predeceased by her parents; nine siblings; and son Steven. She is survived by daughters Courtneye Barrett (John Capshaw, Jr.), and Susan Barrett (Daniel O'Neill); daughter-in-law Heather Barrett Reding; granddaughter Morgan Emily Barrett (Ian Masterson); great-grandson Cash Barrett Masterson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Her family thanks Seven Acres Jewish Senior Living Center, Vantage Hospice, and especially caregiver Kim Pace for their devoted care.
A funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026 at 10:00 am at Pat H. Foley & Company Funeral Home in Houston, with burial that afternoon at Klein Memorial Park in Tomball. Memorial donations to the ASPCA are appreciated.
