While we never had the honor of meeting Martha Whiting personally, we have had long years of learning firsthand from her daughter, Sammie Whiting Ellis, about this wonderful woman who gave so much during her lifetime to her family, the Houston community and the world.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family. May God grant you all peace and harmony during this time of grief knowing that so many of your loved ones sincerely and deeply share your loss with you.

To the Whiting/Yates family, please know that you all are in our prayers. Unfortunately, Cheryl and I just found out yesterday. Otherwise we most certainly would have been there to express our condolences in person. You have many memories of a one of a kind lady to always hold in your hearts. Stay strong and prayerful, our thoughts will be with you.

Aunt Martha was a woman of such integrity and excellence. She will be greatly missed by everyone, but the beauty is she has left a legacy for others to follow. Only once we have learned to follow can we truly learn to lead.

Dear Whiting and Countee families,

My deepest sympathy and sincere thoughts are with you during this time at which you have lost your most admirable matriarch.

Mrs. Martha Whiting lived a long and beautiful life sharing history, education, a beautiful family of girls and grandchildren with all of us. She was a very smart and forward thinking person. She was both a historian and a visionary. She kept the Antioch family held tightly together; and through her wisdom secured its place in history, as well as that of the Fourth Ward and Yates Historical Home whose legacy shall forever stand in Houston and in Texas.

The offspring of a strong, proud, innovative leader, minister and former slave, Jack Yates, she lived up to the legacy that her forebearers established, instilled in others to reach life's highest heights, and imparted in her family and those she touched that same strength, humility, spirituality, and service to others.

Her presence here touched the lives of many both directly and indirectly. Her handiwork will long outlast the 100 years of which she marched among us. For she indeed leaves her mark upon the sands of time.

And so it is now that Martha Countee Whiting rests peacefully in the bosom of the Lord and the gathering of all those preceding her.

Doris, Jacqueline, Sammie, Nan, Tommie, and especially Martha Ann it may be difficult now and you shall miss her greatly as will we all, but know that she has reached the greatest height and love of all, and her spirit will be with you and yours always.

Sincerely and with Love,
from the "Cradle Roll" of Antioch
