Mary Gilliland Obituary

Mary Horst Gilliland
09/24/1946 - 08/30/2025
Mary Horst Gilliland, 78, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished friendships.
Born on September 24, 1946, to Frances McGehee and William Gilliland, Mary was raised with strong family values and a spirited heart. She shared a close bond with her beloved sister, Fran Gilliland, who preceded her in death.
Mary was married to the love of her life, Don Horst, and together they created a joyful life full of fun, friendship, and adventure. Married in Las Vegas, the couple shared a love for poker, travel, and good times - always hand-in-hand and full of laughter. Don preceded her in death, but their bond remained ever-present in Mary's life.
A devoted member of the Adelphi Class at First Methodist Church, Mary was known for her faith, kindness, and deep friendships. She had a special love for dogs and was happiest when surrounded by her four-legged companions and close friends.
Mary was a lifelong teacher, dedicating most of her career to Bastian Elementary, where she touched the lives of countless students with her passion for learning and her unwavering care.
Beyond the classroom, she gave generously of her time and talents as a longstanding board member of MJH Con Dios, an organization committed to supporting the education of children in Texas.
Mary's warmth, wit, and loyalty made her unforgettable to all who knew her. Her generous spirit and loving nature will be deeply missed.
Honorary pallbearers include Roger Caddell, Andy Vavra, John Spalding, Matt Spalding, Phil Leggett, Chris Spalding, Ben Spalding, and Cindy Seligmann.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation at eleven o'clock in the morning on Thursday, September 11, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons , 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where the funeral service is to commence at twelve o'clock noon, where Reverend Tom Davis is to officiate.
Interment will follow the reception, via an escorted cortege at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to MJH Con Dios, 2200 Louetta Rd., Spring, Texas 77388.
