Mary Johnston Obituary

MARY VIRGINIA ARNOLD SCHOELLKOPF JOHNSTON, died on June 9, 2002 at home with her family. Born June 22, 1921 in Houston, Texas to Georgia Buck and Thomas Jewel Arnold. She graduated with honors from Lamar High School. While at the University of Texas in Austin, she distinguished herself by being President of Pi Beta Phi, elected to Phi Beta Kappa and to Mortar Board. She attended Camp Waldemar for many years and was highly decorated. She married Hugo W. (Buddy) Schoellkopf, Jr. in 1942 then William C. Johnston in 1979. Son, Hugo W. Schoellkopf, III and brother, William Buck Arnold, preceded her in death. Survivors include: Husband: William C. Johnston, Daughter: Harriet Schoellkopf Deison, Son-in-law: Peter V. Deison, Daughter-in-law: Gail Obenchain Schoellkopf, Granddaughters: Virginia (Ginny) Deison and Annie Deison Drexler. Grandsons: Hugo W. (Will) Schoellkopf IV and Justin Arnold Schoellkopf. Her brother and sisters, whom she treasured, also survives her: Lucy Arnold, Grace and Tom Arnold, Beverly and Dan Arnold, Jane Arnold Touchstone. She adored her many nieces and nephews. Her personal faith was displayed in being a highly involved and charter member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church and of Park Cities Presbyterian Church. Bridge delighted her, and developed her long lasting and cherished friendships. She was a member and major contributor to the following: Dallas Woman's Club, Junior League of Dallas, Dallas Country Club, and DAR. She was a model of caring and self sacrifice. Her presence, guidance and love will be forever missed. Memorials may be sent to Park Cities Presbyterian Church, 4124 Oak Lawn, Dallas, 75219 or Visiting Nurse Association/Hospice, 1440 W. Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, 75247. A memorial service will be held at Park Cities Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, June 12 at 3 p.m., led by her son-in-law, Dr. Peter V. Deison.
