The years are passing so quickly and so are my family members. My sister, daughter and two nieces have gone to join Melvin in that peaceful place of love and happiness. I hope they're having a great Family Reunion! I am missing all of them so much!

Well, for those reading this message, it's for you!
Cherrish your loved ones while they're with you because when they're gone there is a void that can't quite be filled!! I remember asking Melvin so many times to just stop talking for one minute. now I miss him so much, yes, even his constant talking. Rest on little brother!

I just learned of Melvin's passing, and I am truly saddened. I was in the horn section at U of H with Melvin, and I always wanted to be as good as he was. (Alas, I never was). The human race was diminished the day he left us. My condolences to those he left behind.

Just recently learned that Mr. Dismuke had passed away. He was the consumate cool cat. An excellent band director and trumpet player. Mr. Dismuke expected greatness from his band members, both marching band and stage band. Many memories were created during my time with him at JY. He is surely missed by many.

You will be truly missed,
JY Class of 1977, I will never forget the long Summer band practices but it was well worth it. The songs you arranged for our band was very innovative and we even had a bass guitar player, we thought we were the Ocean of Soul. We are praying for your family.

God be with the family of this great musician and gentleman. For some reason Melvin was on my mind so I searched for him and found this.

Hadn't seen him in years but will always remember his talent.

May 23, 2015

wow, Melvin kept me busy when he was alive and settling his affairs are keeping me busier now that he is gone.I wonder if he is smiling and saying "I told you I can't let you get too much rest you may get lazy."
I will continue for as long as I can to handle his unfinished affairs because he meant just that much to me.

Keep Melvin's memories with you, for his memories will live on and never be forgotten.
Melvin had a way of bringing people together.
Whenever a song is played, you may hear the sound of a trumpet or a french horn that is Melvin watching over you. Melvin has left lasting memories in our hearts.

Wow Dad, you really would have loved your home going service. Our family really pulled it off. It's funny how it's natural for us to take the simple things in life for granted, however, I don't believe that you lived that way.. That is yet another way that you were a leader of the pack. I know we didn't always see things eye to eye, but to say that you are missed is an understatement. To the little boy that use to ride on your shoulders, you were always bigger than life. I just wished I expressed that before your passing. You have enriched my life in ways that I never considered prior to your departure. You have managed to bring family members together that I felt I would never share oxygen with. You've reminded me that roses are for the living and just like death, life is also a reward. You have taught me how to be a good son/father. Albeit in a very non traditional way but a lesson taught is a lesson learned. I marvel at the amount of lives you have actually touched. Your 69 years may seem short, but it was rich with music, love, and passion. You once told me that I was made for music and music was made for me. I ran from that destiny for the majority of my life but I realize now that you were right. Although you are physically gone now, your spirit will reside wthin me and your grandchildren and it will manifest itself through the musical genes that are imbedded in our DNA. And for this reason, Dismuke music will live on! Gone to soon, I think not but it sure feels that way.
Your son

I was deeply saddened to learn of Melvin's passing. We attended the University of Houston together in the late 1960's where we both studied horn with Caesar LaMonaca and played in most all of the university's ensembles. Melvin was a superb musician with an incredible ear. However, for me it was his ability to play the horn and the trumpet equally well that was truly astonishing, something I have never encountered in any other person. He was truly unique. Although I have not seen him for nearly 40 years, I often fondly remember the time we spent together discussing music, current affairs or just simply hanging out. My sincere condolences to his family.
