Pat, my family and I were so sad to hear of your loss. Your sister and I talk every once in a while and she told me. Hoping you find some comfort in knowing how much everyone loved Mike. I, personally, did not get the privilege of meeting/knowing him, but it is very apparent by all the many, many postings here that he was quite a beautiful person. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. God be with you.

Pat, Sharon and Jason,
My heart is saddened for your loss and my prayers are with you. May you find peace and comfort in the memories you shared.
Always quick with a quip, Mick made us laugh and was fun to be around. He also had a very giving and generous nature. He is truly missed, but forever in our hearts.

It was a pleasure to have met you. It was nice to put a picture to the face they say. Just one time in KBR Houston 2006. Thank you for the help you have extended during my term in KBR. AP Uploads etc. Though we are both not in there anymore but your legacy remains. I will always remember the late nights and your early mornings while I was there in KBR Dubai to sort out system issues. The people still benefit on this legacy. Thank you and may you rest in peace. May your family and friends find peace and comfort. God Bless!

I have had the pleasure in working and knowing Mike for 10+ yrs here at KBR. In the beginning he was my computer geek repair guy whenever I had computer problems. I too received a huggable teddy from him for my 1st born that will always be treasured. Very funny, energetic and all around great guy who will truly be missed.
My condolensces go out to the family.

Mike, what great memories you will leave with me. The 2-3 suited in poker will always be called the SHURTLEFF SPECIAL. I could always count on you when Wayland was gone to come over and help me. I can still hear you saying "what you up to gal"? You will be greatly missed.

Mike was my brother, not blood, but spirit. We met in college, then lived together for a year as roommates. Both of us married around the same time and had kids the same age. We hiked, camped, fished, played poker, attended concerts, New Years Parties, birthdays, car shows, rebuilt fences, worked on cars, and roofed houses together. We did a lot together and it was not enough. He was everything a friend could be. A piece of everyone one of us is gone. Goodbye my friend, my brother.

I had the pleasure of working with Mike at KBR for a short while during his time in the IT department, whenever you ran into Mike he always greeted you with a smile,he always had time to help someone or just stop what he was doing and chat for a minute no matter how busy he was. A great guy that will be missed.

I have worked on and off with Mike for about the past 10 years at KBR. He was a great guy and no matter how many dumb questions I asked him he'd always take time to answer them patiently and with a smile. He had a great sense of humor and disposition. I'll always remember that Mike gave me a huge stuffed bear for my baby shower when I was pregnant with my daughter and I always think of him when I see it. My prayers are with his family and friends, I know that he will be greatly missed.

Compared to most, I have only known Mike a relatively short time. He began coming with Mike Rynearson to the Gulf Coast GTOs club meetings and events a few years back, and immediately pitched right in to help.
In that short amount of time I came to realize what a special person he was. Never have I met anyone with a more positive outlook and attitude, always willing to help out at a moments notice. And never was there a task that he would not attempt, always successfully.
His family and friends have lost their rock here on Earth, but know he is still your rock watching out for you from heaven. I pray you allow God to give you His comfort and strength at this time and always.

My name is Bruce Carter; I was Mike’s boss at KBR. I don’t really think of myself as a “boss”. My staff is mostly comprised of long tenured, highly experienced professionals. I prefer to think of us as a team. We share the work and help each other.
A few years ago there was a lot of turnover at KBR and some of my crew (another word I like better than “staff”) at the time had accepted positions outside of KBR. I found myself looking for an experienced replacement. Steve Collen, another long term KBR professional, had joined me a few years before. I’ve known Steve for close to 30 years and I am very glad to have him on my team. Steve had known Mike for 20-25 years and mentioned that Mike might be interested in a change and recommended we talk to him. I knew Mike very slightly since I had seen him around the company and knew he had a very diverse background including assignments to some pretty miserable places around the world where he had served the company well.
It turned out that Mike was ready for a change and was interested in the work we were doing since it was different than what he was doing at the time or before. I thought his broad background could be just right for us.
So Mike joined us and he just fit right in. In a very short time he was up and running on the projects we were working on. Before long he was already contributing some ideas to increase the accuracy and precision of our work. In fact, we joked around about the difference between “accuracy” and “precision” within the context of what we do. This is a subjective differentiation but was useful to keep us focused on one aspect or the other as relevant to what we were trying to accomplish.
I have to tell you even at this late stage in my career I looked forward to getting up every day to work with these two men. We all have to work for a living but it’s immensely satisfying when you can do it with people you respect and like. And this is what happens, these men became more than co-workers; they had become my friends.
We shared the work but we shared other parts of ourselves as well. We all had families that we were proud of and from time to time we would tell each other about it; small snippets of our lives that we didn’t have to reveal; but we wanted to.
We all loved cars more so than average. We all have or had cars that we owned and worked on that were very special to us. I remember when Mike researched and eventually bought his GTO. I even found a hot rod engine for him at a very good price. He drove all the way up to The Woodlands to get it. Every Monday I would ask him for a status report and he would excitedly tell me about how he had rebuilt the front suspension or got the transmission overhauled. Most folks don’t understand how such things can be so satisfying but I think it’s the same in any endeavor that is truly a hobby.
It’s my feeling that Mike enjoyed his work, he enjoyed his hobbies and he enjoyed his comradeship with us and his other fine friends some of whom I have now had the honor to meet. Mike was truly a good guy; one of the nicest persons I have known in my lifetime. I will miss my colleague; I will miss my friend.

I worked with Mike at KBR. Mike was very affectionate person. We use to joke at each other. We had good time together. We will miss Mike very much. May god give family members strength and courage to bear the irreparable loss.

I met Mickey on the first day of school in 10th. grade(1968). We sat next to each other in Mr. Mazzu's German class.
We became good friends and shared many classes together and lots of good times all through high school and through his time at UT.
When I got married in 1975, I asked him to be my best man.
Over the years we went on our different paths in life, but I always had many good memories of him and the times we spent together.
Fast forward to 2008. I had just come back to work at KBR after a long asence. I was looking for a phone number in outlook, and I came accross the name Mike Shutleff. Surely there could not be more than one person with that name.
Several days later, I had occasion to be on his floor, so I walked by his office and there he was, working on his computer and eating a sandwich.
We spent the next 1/2 hour catching up on all the people we had known back then. In the time since, our schedules didn't allow us to see each other often, but each time was filled with lots of old memories and a lot of good times. I only wish we could have had more time to reaquaint.
Teresa and I send out our heartfelt sympathies to Trisha and the rest of the family in their time of sorrow.
Mickey will surely be missed.

It was with deep sadness that I learned of Mike's death. I had the pleasure of working with Mike from 1990-1998 at MWK. We both grew up on the SE side of Houston and we would reminisce of days at Milby and Jones and Saturdays spent at the roller rink. He was a character. There will be more laughter in heaven with his presence.

I worked with Mike for a few years at Kellogg and we remained friends long after. He was responsible for my addiction to Fantasy Football and I will miss our Monday morning phone calls as we bemoaned our Fantasy Football teams. I find myself repeating Mike's quotes about football. He was a good friend and a great guy. My thoughts are with his family during this time. God Bless.

My heartfelt condolences and prayers to Mike's wife, family and friends for their tragic and untimely loss. As a work colleague of Mike's at KBR, he was invariably kind and courteous, an invaluable member of our team, with a great sense of humor, and always came thorough with the right advice when we needed his expertise. Often we sorely tried his patience but Mike was always there to set us straight. We will miss Mike very much at KBR but will cherish our memories.

My name is Phil Nibert. I am an accounting manager at KBR. I have had the honor and pleasure of knowing and working with Mike for almost 10 years.
I worked with Mike on numerous efforts for our financial group, including the financial system project at KBR, a project effort that lasted several years. Mike always was very helpful and would work very hard on any project effort or task that he was associated with. He was a very hard working and sincere individual and would any task to make sure that the customer was satisfied.
Mike would support KBR personnel in the home office and also at project sites and would work tirelessly to do so.
Mike and I did share one longstanding joke - I would sometimes see Mike leaving the home office around 3 in the afternoon or so and I would ask Mike if he was leaving to go by the jobsite on his way home - you see Mike and I had this joke that he would tell his bosses that he was leaving the office early to go by the jobsite and help them with some financial problem when actually what he was doing was driving by the jobsite and waving at them from his car while driving home (going BY the jobsite!).
The truth was Mike was one of the most hardworking and sincere individuals I have met at KBR and for all of the hardworking people KBR has that is saying a lot. Mike would help anybody anytime, always with good humor. He spent countless hours working with people in the home office or at the jobsites.
I also know he was as passionate about his private life as he was about his work life, with a few examples being his love of cars and the National Football League.
In closing, it was an honor to know and work with Mike. Thanks to his family members for letting us have so much of Mike's time.
Mike, my dear friend, be sure and go by the jobsite on your way to heaven.

Mike, I remember holding you when you just a sweet baby - you were such a precious baby. We remember when you and Bob dug a hold in the backyard to make a swiming pool. And then you grew up so fast because we remember when you and Pat married. What a wonderful couple you were and are now. We love you and Pat and will miss you so much.

Mike was a friend that I met in the neighborhood where he grew up. Hardworking and friendly, always willing to lend a hand. We enjoyed an occasional Astros ballgame together. Our favorite game was the '86 'Stros vs Mets playoff game, a 16-inning loss. Good memories about a good friend. May he rest in peace.
