Oscar Holland Obituary

OSCAR HOLLAND was born March 21, 1933 in Kingsport, Tennessee, and came to Houston with his mother in 1948 after his father's death. Oscar had a distinguished career. He received his BBA from the University of Houston in 1959, taking, and passing, the CPA examination prior to graduation. He worked in private industry for Western Natural Gas and Hill Engineering. He practiced public accounting with Main Lafrentz & Co., and then joined Browning Ferris & Co. (later BFI) in 1972. At that time, Browning Ferris had a minimal office and eight garbage companies. Oscar took over as Chief Accountant, later becoming Controller. He continued in that capacity as the company grew into a billon dollar per year enterprise with world wide offices. As time went on, Oscar's role with the company expanded, and he held the job of Chief Financial Officer. After his retirement, he served as a consultant for BFI. His later years were filled with activity. After his retirement, Oscar had time to devote to a lifelong passion for learning, especially about history. He and Sally traveled, and spent time with their friends and family. They became active members of First United Methodist Church, where they touched many lives. Oscar's keen sense of humor was evident even in the last hours of his life. He was quiet by nature, but during his many hospital stays over the last year he never failed to reach out to other patients, sharing his wisdom and faith, and lifting spirits with his wit. Oscar was a role model for his grandchildren, whom he taught the importance of strong family relationships and of having a goal-oriented focus. Oscar died peacefully, at home, surrounded by family, on January 4. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Oscar is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Sally; daughter Rebecca Holland, daughter Nannette Levett-Prinsep, and her husband, Rod, and grandchildren Chris Dyer, Jacqueline Levett-Prinsep, and Andrew Levett-Prinsep. Honorary pallbearers are Rod Levett-Prinsep, Andrew Levette-Prinsep, Chris Dyer, Don Cassling, Charles Legler, Jim Maszeros, and Bruce Rank. The family would especially like to thank Oscar's home healthcare workers, Tim Frankel with Home Health Resources, and Danielle Cook with Vitas Hospice for their kindness and devotion, which were above and beyond the call of duty. There will be a memorial service at First United Methodist Church, 1320 Main Street, Friday, January 11, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, a donation made to any of the following would be appreciated: First Methodist Church's First Choice Ministry, The Heart Association, or the charity of your choice.
