Oswald Bischoff Obituary

Oswald Julius "OJ" Bischoff, a native Houstonian and third-generation Texan, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the age of 88. OJ was born in the Heights neighborhood of Houston, Texas on June 8, 1924. Part of the Greatest Generation, at age 17, OJ volunteered as a Coast Guardsman in World War II. Enlisting on March 10, 1942, he served on the original crew of Destroyer Escort USS Hurst as an Electrician First Class, completing 24 roundtrip convoy missions across the Atlantic in support of the Allied Forces and making three passages through the Panama Canal. Aboard the USS Hurst, OJ and his shipmates also participated in convoy missions in preparation for the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. Following V-E Day, the USS Hurst traveled to the Pacific Theatre where OJ supported the search for survivors of downed aircraft on South Pacific Islands until being honorably discharged on April 16,1946. OJ kept in close contact with his shipmates throughout his life.
Following the War, OJ returned to Houston and married Elvie Staples Bischoff, who remained his loving and steadfast companion for 67 years. OJ attended the University of Houston and then began his professional career at Gribble Stamp & Stencil Co. In 1974, he set out on his own, founding Approval Stamp Works with one other employee. Together with Elvie and son Mike-and daughter Dee and her husband Jerry from 1977 to 1979-OJ grew the business, eventually employing 85 people and producing over 6000 custom marking devices per day at the time he sold the company to Johnson Worldwide Associates in 1991. Each of OJ's three children, including his oldest son Richard, followed his example and started successful small businesses of their own.
An active member of his community, OJ served on the vestry of The Church of the Good Shepherd, and later became a member of The Church of St. John the Divine. OJ was also an Associate Board Member of the Shriner's Hospital of Houston, and an original Salt Grass trail rider from 1954 to 1958-primarily on the Houston Jaycees wagon where he served as Co-Wagon Boss. OJ also served as a Chapter Advisor for the Reagan Chapter Order of DeMolay, a Chaplain at the Wilbourn and Jacques DeMolay Masonic Lodge, and as a member of the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Houston Scottish Rite, the Arabian Shrine Temple, the Royal Order of the Jesters, and the Downtown Rotary Club of Houston.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Oswald Julius, Sr. and Ann Logan Bischoff, and sister, Margaret Ann Bischoff Stelly. Surviving OJ are his three children, Richard Lee Bischoff, I and wife Linda, Dee Linda Jackson and husband Jerry, Michael Lynn Bischoff, Sr. and wife Colleen; eleven grandchildren, Regan Jackson Jurick and husband Keith, Jeremy Joseph Jackson and wife Sarah, Brandy Bischoff England and husband Seth, Anthony Joseph Heins and wife Alex, Richard Lee Bischoff, II, Jonathan Paul Heins and wife Patrice, Michael Lynn Bischoff, Jr., Kathryn Francis Bischoff, Lauren Elizabeth Bischoff, Alexandra Mullane Bischoff, and Andrew Thomas Bischoff; and two great grandchildren, Hodges Elizabeth Jackson and Maddox Paul Jurick.
A caring man, who always put family first, OJ spent countless hours at family events. Known affectionately as "Paw Paw" to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, OJ seldom missed a grandchild's dance recital or ballgame. He spent some of his most cherished moments at his lake house, "The Bischoff Compound," where his large, loving family gathered and built around him.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Heights Funeral Home, 1317 Heights Blvd., Houston, TX 77008. In celebration of OJ's life, a memorial service will be held on Monday, April 8, 2013 at 4:00 PM at The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Blvd., Houston, TX 77019. Serving as pallbearers during the service are OJ's grandchildren, Jeremy, Keith, Anthony, Lee, Jonathan, Michael, and Andrew, and his nephew, Patrick Stelly. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to The Beacon, 1117 Texas Ave., Houston, TX 77002, or The Arbor School, 1635 Blalock Rd., Houston, TX 77080.

So sorry for your loss. We are distant cousins; OJ was a first cousin to my father-in-law, Bob Bischoff (Henry and Pearl Bishop's son - they went by Bishop but Bob had his last name changed back to he original Bischoff). I'm sorry my husband, Gary, and I were unable to attend the visitation and service but I understand Bob and Earlene Bischoff (along with their daugther, Darlene, and husband John) were able to come to the visitation. I hope we are able to meet some of our extended family sometime in the future. God bless you all at this difficult time.

Very sorry to read about your loss. I also worked at Gribble Stamp & Stencil back in his days at the Franklin Ave. tunnel area, back in 1950 or there about.
I also worked at the Fannin St. address.
He was a very fine man. I too am getting old (age 85).

I was deeply saddened to learn of OJ's passing. I was aware that his health was deteriorating in recent months, but I hoped I would still see him at the lake this summer. I will miss our talks. He would come over in a golf cart and we would talk about things both large and small. I particularly enjoyed his stories about his service experience. He was rightly proud to be part of a generation that gave so much to our country. OJ was as genuine as they come.

Donna joins me in extending our condolences to Elvie, and to Dee, Mike and Richard. He will live on in your memories.

Richard, Mike, & Dee,
My sincerest condolences to you & your family. Your "dad" was a great guy. I always enjoyed being around him. He was the same age as my dad when he passed. We are lucky we got to enjoy them as long as we did. Sorry I'm not able to attend the service, but I'll say a prayer for him & your family!

A wonderful man, integrity he was. So happy he crossed my path and gave Dee to be my wife. Father-in-law, couldn't have had a better one! my fondest memories were at the lake and drinking Pearl after a hard days work or enjoyment. Thanks for the last 43 years, love u

Dear Friends and Family,

Dad passed away comfortably and quickly. Six weeks ago, he fell and suffered a severe concussion and cerebral hemorrhaging. At the time, the doctors thought he would only stay conscious for another two to three hours before falling into a coma. He not only survived the night, but sat up in bed and enjoyed all the company. The next day he was moved to ICU where he had a heart attack--at this time his condition became very bad and got worse. After three days, the hospital suggested putting him into hospice at the hospital for the next two to three days. Well, he was there ten days before we moved him from hospice to the Hamptons, an assisted living facility. Amazing! While at the Hampton's he became stronger--eating, feeding himself, starting to walk with a walker, and, most of all, complaining about when he was going to get out and go home. The Lord was not ready to take him and he was not ready to go.

The last six weeks have been a special time. He was very coherent and enjoyed all of his visitors, both friends and family. His progress advanced so well that we picked him up last Sunday to go to Easter Service and brunch with us, and he had a wonderful time. His faith was well founded and we thank God for all the wonderful years he was here with us. He was an excellent role model of a father and friend.
WE THANK ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR LOVE AND PRAYERS.

God bless you, Dad, we will miss you!
Richar

Dear Elvie and extended Bischoff family,
May you know how many smiles and good times I remember with so many of you. I considered you my second family growing up in Houston! I remember O.J. as a great example of what a husband and father was suppose to be. He was always the one with the camera recording any family event and then retelling others how great the ones in the pictures were. Many laughs were shared at the retelling.
Elvie, you were always the most beautiful and caring wife. You made O. J.'s life so wonderful!
Richard, Dee, and Mike, he could not have been more proud of each of you and your families
My love for you all is cherished and I pray God's strength for you at this sad time.

To Elvie, Dee and Jerry, Richard, Mike, and Kids;

So sorry for your loss of O J. He was a fine man and will be missed by his many friends. I first met O J in 1979 when he bought a lot on Lake Limestone. It only took the first meeting to see what a good guy he was. There was hardly anyone on the lake at that time and we are neighbors " across the cove so to speak". I watched him build his house right out on the main lake. Then he built, rebuilt, and rebuilt the bulkhead. He told me once that he had more money in the bulkhead than he had in the house. It was not too long before the entire Bischoff Bunch arrived and bought additional lots and built houses. To say the least , they were a great addition to the community. They came and enjoyed the lake to the fullest. O J really loved the place. Even after he had health problems and could not drive, Jerry and Dee would bring O J and Elvie to the lake and he would get in his golf cart and drive over and we would visit. He would always let me know that he had had a stroke, they had to put an elevator in their house, and this golf cart is all they will let me drive.

I know, right now, he is sitting in a golf cart in front of the Pearly Gates visiting with Jesus.

Love and Prayers to all
