Paul Berlin Obituary

Paul Berlin
1930-2017
Paul Sanders Berlin, age 86, passed away June 23, 2017, in Houston, Texas.
Paul Berlin is a native of Memphis, Tennessee. He began his broadcasting career in 1948 at the age of seventeen, when he won a contest that gave him a summer DJ job on a Memphis radio station. In 1950 at age 19, Paul came to KNUZ in Houston. He was an immediate hit and won numerous most-popular DJ contests. Within a short time he began promoting concerts and dances featuring Rock and Roll legends like Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Platters, Paul Anka, Nat King Cole and many more. In 1974 he moved to KQUE and in 1997 to KSEV and in 2001 to KBME. He retired in 2004 and returned to KSEV in 2010 where the "Best-of-Paul" is aired every Saturday evening.
Paul's unique style and warm personality have earned him many awards. He was the first recipient of the American Women in Radio & TV Media Award as Radio Personality of the Year, Marconi Award Nominee for Major Market Personality of the Year, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, when it opened in 1995. In 2002, Paul was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Inez Elbel Berlin. He is survived by five sons, Brad Berlin and wife Patti of The Woodlands, Glenn Berlin and wife Sue of Houston, Bruce Berlin and wife Dana of The Woodlands, Donald Berlin of Austin, TX and Craig Berlin and wife Jamie of Houston; grandchildren, Evan Berlin, Elise Berlin, Ross Berlin and wife Melissa, Valerie Berlin, Denise Pennington and husband Josh, Austin Berlin and wife Cam, Paul Berlin, Carson Berlin, and Courtney Berlin; great grandchildren, Samantha Berlin, Paige Pennington, and Tate Pennington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at South Main Baptist Church, 4100 Main St., Houston, Texas 77002. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children by visiting www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.gov
It was Paul's explicit request that his Memorial Service be open to "All of Heavenly Houston." His favorite advise to his peers: "Be informative. Be entertaining. Or be quiet."

I grew up on the music Mr Berlin played and listened to his program faithfully...I miss his program and his outgoing personality that could always cheer me up if I was having an off day. He is sorely missed and no one could ever take his place. I loved his program...and it was so great because of the man behind it: Mr. Berlin

0po-Oh my goodness, I'm just learning of dear, sweet Mr. Berlin's passing :( What a talented, wonderful man ~ a wealth of fun, facts, trivia , stories and a love for music that he shared with us all, for so many years ! We were the lucky ones ! I will never forget his tales and tunes ~ he made the airwaves of Houston SPECIAL, because HE truly was special, just one- of-a-kind. God speed, Mr Berlin ~ I suspect a special spot & a mic was waiting, just for you, at the pearly gates. Blessings & comfort to your dear family, always. Here is a picture of Paul Berlin, Scott Arthur and myself ( the only time I got to meet him in person ) at the KBME off air party 12/17/2004 ,held at The Garden's in SE Houston . I wrote them each a special thank you letter for all their work on air - and baked my Aunties cookies. I hope he knew how loved he was ! What a tremendous legacy . We will miss you .

I listened to you through every change on the radio dial over all of the years, and frequently with my Daddy. I loved your music choices, stories, wit and wisdom. I have the VHS tape of the evening reception for you long ago for your 50 years in radio. So many of your lines are special: "Mr Too Sweet Himself, ladies protect your coif today." It was one of the great privileges I ever had to be Paul Berlin's last newsman on KQUE, where he set broadcasting standards for professionalism behind the scenes and for entertainment over the airwaves. Man, it was fun! My deepest sympathies to Paul's children for their loss today and in the recent past. As Mr. Berlin always said to me, I say to him, "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore."

As comedian Carol Burnett would say I'm so glad we had this time together and now it's time to say good bye. Love to listen to that Golden voice with so much history about the artist whose songs he would play. Also enjoyed his closing when it was time for him to go off the air. Thanks to the Berlin family for sharing Mr. Paul Berlin with us out in radio land. Sleep on Mr. Berlin and take your rest.

I am a 2nd generation Houstonian. Just hearing Paul Berlin's name brings back such wonderful memories. We enjoyed listening to him so much. The radio in the kitchen was always tuned to his station and the music, wow the music. Momma always singing. This man was such a big part of my magical childhood in northeast Houston! Thank you Mr. Berlin for being a man of integrity and representing your industry in such a classy way! To all Mr. Berlin's family and friends: how lucky are you to have known this man. In 1950 or '51, my father was dating Nezzie before she met Paul Berlin. One evening she had a date with Paul, so she suggested that Phil go out with her roommate Bobbye. Phil and Bobbye dated, fell in love, got married, and I was their first daughter in '52. Uncle Paul was my father's best man, and Aunt Nezzie was probably one of the bride's maids. I've seen photos of the Berlins at my folks wedding. I remember my father tuning the car radio to KNUZ to listen to the Paul Berlin Show in the late '50's and early '60's. The last time I remember seeing Aunt Nezzie, Uncle Paul, and the boys was in the summer of '66. They were a fabulous couple who touched my life. God bless their whole family.

He was a huge part of what we thought was important in Houston back in the early 1950's. Met him when I was in high school and was lucky enough to have a bit of a relationship with him. He invited us to his radio show and in those days, the local DJ's like Paul were considered incredibly important to young folks. Will never forget him.

When I became of age in 1972, the Dome Shadows was the first nightclub I attended. I have many fond memories of that venue, and when Paul was there...he always made me feel welcome.

When he switched to KQUE, I became a staunch fan.

It was always, the story behind the story, that intrigued me.

He will be greatly missed.

I am so saddened to hear the news of Paul's passing. He was one of the ALL TIME greats in radio and my friend for over 50 years. Paul was a true legend who treated everyone he met with kindness and warmth. He knew how to make everyone feel important and was extremely loved and appreciated by all the great artists of his generation from Elvis to Ray Charles to Johnny Cash. He played all the best music and helped propel many into superstardom. If he played your record, you dreams could come true.

I remember growing up to Paul Berlin on KNUZ and later when I started to go out dancing at clubs, I remember him at the Dome Shadows. He was a sweet man and a great talent. I remember seeing him at KNUZ several times and he was always smiling and welcoming. He was one of a kind and I miss him.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends, for they have surely lost a wonderful person.

As so many have noted, Paul Berlin had no equal as a broadcaster, and his passing leaves a void which can not be filled. During my high school years (the 50s) he was probably the single biggest influence in the formation of my musical taste, and decades later, when he started playing my piano recordings on KQUE, that was a major turning point in my life. It enabled me to meet many wonderful people that I would not have met otherwise. That alone is a debt I could never repay. Others here have also noted that a world without Paul certainly represents the end of an era. Those who knew him, or listened to him, were better off for the experience. Thanks, Paul, and condolences to the family.

So sad to hear of the passing of an great man. Paul was a force on the air and in person. He was a mentor, advisor and friend. I'm sorry I missed the celebration of life but I knew nothing about it, unfortunately. However, I did have time to tell a few Paul stories on the KSEV salute this past weekend. The best thing I remember about working at KNUZ for fifteen years, was The Paul Berlin show! RIP, Paul

Time has flown. Seems like only yesterday , when as a teenager I would listen in awe as Paul told incredible stories
while getting his haircut at the Blodgett Street Barber Shop by the fabulous "Skeeter" Skinner.

A good man is gone.

June 27, 2017

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of Paul's family during this difficult time of grief. My husband and I have been faithful listeners of Paul Berlin for many years. He was truly "unique" on the radio and even though we never met him in person, we felt like we knew him. If you were ever feeling lonely or blue, all you had to do was listen to Paul and you couldn't help but feel better! We are senior citizens now and we still listen to the old radio shows on KSEV every Saturday night! It feels like we are right there with Paul when we are listening and we go right back in time with him. We will miss him and he will always have a special place in our hearts. So sorry to hear of your loss. I & my husband, Ted Jones, were both at KNUZ when Dave Morris brought your Dad to Houston @ age 19. I was traffic mgr & my husband was deejay. Nezie was Dave's secretary & we enjoyed working together. Ted is deceased but I have great memories of working with both of them & great stories of those years. We moved from downtown to Blodgett & Caroline Streets & our Knuz family consisted of Paul, Biff Collie, Marge Tillman, Ted Jones, LauraLee McBride (whose father wrote the popular song, "Cattle Call"). We also enjoyed seeing Mrs. Berlin when she would visit Paul. At one time when u boys were growing up, some of us lived in West U. You were so special to your Mom & Dad, & now you have your memories to carry you through the years. I was so sorry & sad to read about your loss of your Mom, but didn't have a chance to send condolences. My prayers are with you during this difficult time, & only time will bring you comfort & peace. Warm wishes to all of the Berlin family.

I've had a lifelong career in radio because of Paul Berlin. I went to elementary school with his son Brad and he told me what his Dad did for a living, a radio deejay. I became fascinated with broadcasting and began working in my teens. Many years later, I worked with Mr. Berlin during his tenure at KBME and it was a thrill to work with a legend who'd inspired me. He was a gentleman and a total professional. There won't be another one like him. This talented man made a huge difference in my life. Thank you for all the memories . . . I remember when you had your record shop on Greenbriar in the 50's. My friends and I went into a little booth where we could play records we were "thinking" of buying! The year was about 1955. It was always so much fun. Every time I hear (not often!) songs like Diddy Woo and Work with me Annie, I think of you and your record shop and your show! Later, when you broadcast from KNUZ, I was down at the station several times on a Saturday morning and you'd put me on the air to say hi to my friends. So nice of you. Thanks for all the Elvis songs you played during the 50's! Thank you for making all our teenage years so wonderful and happy. Your wonderful voice was always so filled with cheer and incredible facts! Thank you. Gail Reaben (Houston)
