Paul Howard Carr Jr.

Paul Carr Obituary

PAUL HOWARD CARR, JR. went to join his Holy Father, Saturday, February 18th, 2006, at the age of 74. Paul Carr was born in El Monte, California to Paul H. Carr, Sr. and Edith Cain Carr and resided in California until he graduated from high school at the age of 16. He joined the Air Force and was stationed at Ellington Field, Texas where his God-given talents were discovered by Rice coach, Jess Neely at a Rice-Ellington Field football scrimmage. He was immediately offered a scholarship to Rice University. After a scholarship battle between University of Houston and Rice, Paul decided on the U of H, where he lettered four years, was captain of the team, was president of the Varsity H Association, and was elected U of H Who's Who by both faculty and student body. An All American candidate for fullback, he also played linebacker, punted, and kicked extra points. During his junior year, he was drafted in the 7th round by the San Francisco 49ers where his face graced the West Coast on the Foster & Kleiser "Make Mine Milk" billboards, cereal boxes and milk cartons. Due to serious injury, he was forced to give up his professional football career in 1958 and went to work for Shell Oil Company where he won the Golden Gate Award in Sales and Public Relations for the San Francisco division two consecutive years. His love of competition pulled him back into the athletic arena where he became a high school football and track coach for the next 30 years in the Cy-Fair and Huntsville/Livingston School Districts. He was inducted into the University of Houston Athletic Hall of Fame for football in 1977. The balance of Paul's life was spent working his magic with young people. Paul greatly impacted many lives, from the impressionable high school athlete, to the elementary P.E. student to whom he taught the meaning of integrity, hard work and desire. He instilled the importance of playing sports with "heart", not just ability. He taught and lived by his favorite quote "when the going gets tough, the tough get going". Paul Carr was always fun loving, but most importantly he had a gift of making everyone feel special and was known for giving many a nickname or term of endearment. Paul was loved and respected by his friends, family, and peers. He will be missed and remembered by many from every facet of his life. Paul leaves behind a large close knit family, wife of twenty-three years, Anne Carr, children Paul H. Carr III, Lance Harlan Carr, Candis Carr and the late Matthew Cain Carr; ten grandchildren: Livia Carr Carran, Sky Carr, Harlan Carr, Heath Beeman, Shannon Beeman, Jacob Carr, Jordan Carr, all of Houston, Kyle Carr and Ainsley Carr of Fredericksburg, TX and Colette Carr Biondi of Pittsburgh, PA., and three great grandchildren, Cassidy Reagan, Lilly Reagan and Ava Carran of Houston. He also leaves his first love, mother of his children, and life-long friend, Patricia Harlan Carr. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 24, 2006, at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 13000 Jones Road, Houston, TX 77070.

I'm sorry to hear of the lost of your father. I have the fondest memory of Coach Carr. He was my escort at the father-daughter Blue Bird dinner when I was about 8 years old. Thanks for sharing him.
