Peter Begin Obituary

Begin
Peter Begin , Born in Montreal, Canada, raised in Brooklyn and Brentwood Long Island, Peter succumbed to cancer on November 11, 2010 one month before his 68th birthday at the V A Hospital on Long Island where his family resides. After graduating from Brentwood High School he joined the U. S. Air Force and was stationed in San Antonio as a medic. His interest in medicine was tweaked and his lifetime habit of caretaking was born. Moving to Houston in the early 70's, he was employed by Baylor College of Medicine for 18 years and operated the bookstore supplying books to students and medical and office supplies to doctors.
Diagnosed with ADD at an early age and basically self educated, Peter had an innate intelligence and constant quest for knowledge. His mountains of books can testify to his interests: philosophy, history, (ancient and modern) biographies of historic figures, and all of the classics. He could expound on any subject but you wouldn't want to hear his takes on today's politics.
Peter was beyond generous when it came to helping others. The needs of others always came before his. To Peter lending a helping hand meant lending his heart and soul in all of his endeavors and he never expected reciprocation, it was loyalty that mattered to him.
Endearingly eccentric with a zany demeanor, Peter never really left the 60's and 70's. His creed of "Love and Peace" and "Live and Let Live" endeared him to all and lasted a lifetime. His love of classical music and composers did not deter him from having his favorite artists from the 60's and 70's - Dylan, Neil Diamond (Solitary Man), Linda Ronstadt, (Heart Like a Wheel), the Eagles (Desperado) and all the works of Anne Murray and Emmy Lou Harris. Peter was the life of any party ? a dancing machine with a kinder, gentler, George Carlin-esque wit and he was always chasing rainbows.
Peter and his life-mate of 32 years, Raymond, moved to the Cherryhurst Park Community in Montrose in 1982. There it became Peter's mission to clean out and groom the park that had been in neglect for many years. He began planting flower beds and confiscating uprooted crepe myrtles from demolition sites. Peter planted most of the crepes that now thrive there. Grass was laid and diligent watering was done by extending hoses from bordering houses. The Parks department took notice and came aboard to complete the project. This resulted in a newer safer playground and refurbishment of the civic clubhouse. An irrigation system and lighting throughout the park were installed. The park in now a public, peaceful green space for everyone to enjoy.
As Peter arrived home in the afternoons, the animals in the hood-dogs on leashes-cats-not would rush his van to grovel his attention. It would take him 15 minutes to get into the house as each awaited its special pat and words of encouragement. There was even a one-legged grackle, shunned by its flock, which would come down from its perch to Peter's "Grackle call" to be hand fed. Trust the animals, they know more than we give them credit for. For all of the household pets in Peter's life (and there were many) there were none that did not feel Peter's warmth as he cradled them to their last breath.
So many people sought Peter's council and those undergoing emotional stress could count on his words of wisdom and understanding to guide them through it. His goodbyes were always followed by the words "Be good to yourself" - words that he didn't always heed himself. There was a need in him to care for the elderly and he was there at the end for many of them. Holding, comforting them and channeling his spirit to them. This was something Raymond was not able to provide to Peter since all communications were cut off by Peter's family for unexplained reasons.

Follow the song of the summer sun
Wander with me where you go
Ten thousand dreams-I know everyone
A million more is what I'm hoping form
For isn't love what we live to know?

Where were you when you were young?
Did you hide behind whoever tried to please you?
Where were you when you were young?
Did you have eyes just to ignore me?
Or, were you looking for me?

And tell me how long before you believe me
The summer sun still loves the rain.
Ten thousand times you may leave me
A million more is what I'm hoping for
For doesn't love bring you home again?
Anne Murray, 1979
Peter will be missed by numerous friends, both human and four legged. Please raise a glass to Peter or take a comforting stroll in Cherryhurst Park as no formal memorial is planned.

Last Call... March 26, 1976

you looked like Diablo the night we met
with Charles Manson hair could i ever forget
Brooklyns's jagged edge could barely disguise the gentle soul, the loving heart, the warmth inside
you were the amber glow in the morning haze
the blinding shine in our yellow days
and i love you...i love you the first time i saw you and i always will love you
as the summer sun still loves the rain - did it soften the blow
did you call out my name - i'll never know
i longed for the night to suck up your pain
but rights were wronged and again, i'll never know
now you're the song in the trees when the winds blow
you're the Blackbird, the bubble gum in my rainbow
you're the Beacon's Light, a Gossimer Kite
and you have to know
that i love you, i love you the first time i saw you and i always will love you - my Peto

Ray,

From a quote I recently read - "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." Peter had so much love to give that those who were fortunate enough to know him were witnesses to that fact.
I truly miss the Cherryhurst days! So many memories of the dogs, the walks around the park, the long conversations on the front stoop, the laughter, the drinking and just good friends!
Thank you for sending pictures of Peter. I will cherish those along with your handwritten memo. Please know that we love and care about you!

Dear Ray,
So many wonderful memories of Peter & Cherryhurst park. He found my sweet dog Lucy in the mud and forever became her godparent. She even managed to wag her tail for him when we came by to say goodbye on her last trip to the vet. He always had a laugh & a hug for me no matter how bad his day was. You both are dear friends & I will always treasure our times together. He will be missed & I am deeply sorry for your loss.
Love
Susan

Raymond, Peter will live in our hearts because we had the good fortune to know him personally and because so many grew to know him through your beautifully written tribute and story of Peter. My prayer is that the hurt will heal soon and the many wonderful memories will bring laughter and smilies to your life. I loved sharing a little of both with you yesterday. Thank you.

No matter whether we had seen each other an hour before or a it had been a year we always would pick up our conversation where we left off, never wondering what to say next. I will always remember and cherish the door bell ringing and you with your special cake and flowers every time I visited Houston. I'll miss you very much, Peter.

Raymond,

Does this picture make me look fat? Well, I was never one pound over weight, it was just my short legs. Just want you to know, I have found Peter, and he is adjusting fine in the Astral Dimension. Look for us in the breeze when there is none, and you will know we were there. If there is a ripple in still water, no stone was tossed and no wind did blow....smile and say hello.

Your friends from the other side,

Wrapping our love around you!!

I will always remember the site of Peter walking along the sidewalks of the neighborhood, one or more dogs on leashes at his side, with the cat dutifully following along behind, no matter which way they went or how far. Periodically Peter would stop to visit with us, always with enthusiastic, animated conversation & laughter. Then Peter and his entourage would continue on ..... but always ready to pause to visit with one more friend. We will miss you Peter!

Peter, I will always picture you crouched down saying hello to whatever dog I had with me and looking up with fun and laughter in your eyes. A chat with you was always interesting, witty and wise and always lifted my spirits. We had some good times at Marie's and in the wonderful park that you made so beautiful. We will all miss your light.
Raymond, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Peter's life was symbolic of what possibly we all hope for when our time in this life has passed, "he made a difference to those he encountered along the way". Peter gave of himself to others, without a hint of condition or hope for reciprocation. The animals knew Peter well beyond what our eyes could see and his love for them was something to behold and witness. Thank you Peter for all your goodness and for all the fond memories. You are in our hearts forever. A stroll through Cherryhurst Park will never be the same... Until we meet again...enjoy your journey...and we hope you catch your rainbow!!

Ps. We also hope you learn to mount a horse more gracefully in your next incarnation….thanks for that funny memory!!

Pss. Don’t worry we’ve got Raymond under our wing.

Sending our love to you!
