Phyllis Davis Obituary

Phyllis Beth Davis
1926-2016
Phyllis Beth Davis peacefully went to be with her Lord on June 1, 2016, from the Alzheimer's section of The Plaza at The Buckingham retirement home. She was born to Opal and Roy Chumbley January 15, 1926, in Champaign, IL. She graduated from Champaign High School and The University of Illinois where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She met Jared (Jerry) Davis at the University. They fell in love and dated throughout their college years. They married after Jerry returned from naval service in World War II. Phyllis was a very devoted Mother and loved her family dearly. She loved playing bridge and doing intricate needle work. She also loved travel and her retirement summer home atop the Blue Ridge Mountains in beautiful Virginia at Wintergreen Resort, which was only 45 miles from her sister Jeanette and husband Clifford Buys in Charlottesville, VA. She had many great friends in the First Baptist Church she attended in Waynesborough, VA. Phyllis sponsored a bible study class for many years in her Houston home and she was a long time member of Second Baptist Church in Houston.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerry, sister-in-law Dorothy Peter and husband Walter Peter of Rochester, NY, and niece Nancy Smith of Swisher, Iowa. She is survived by her daughter Barbara Davis and husband Miles (Skip) Branstetter II of Deer Park, TX, son Dr. Kent Davis and wife Robin Davis and their children Hannah, Jack and Olivia, all of Houston, niece Jodi Stahlbrodt and husband Bob Stahlbrodt of West Henrietta, NY. She is also survived by her sister Jeanette Buys and husband Clifford Buys of Charlottesville, VA and niece Deborah Struchen and her daughter of Irmo, SC.
The family wishes to thank Liz George, Manager of the Alzheimer's section of the Plaza, her loving caregivers and hospice workers for their faithful loving care of Phyllis. Friends are invited to a visitation with the family from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Tues., June 7 at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway in Houston. Her funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wed., June 8 in the Chapel of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Champaign, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Association of Houston and SE Texas.

Dear Jeanette and family.
You may remember me from Champaign. My maiden name was Dallenbach and I married Howard "Butch" Randall, also of Champaign. I looked at Phyllis' Obituary because of the 1926 birth year (mine, too) and the Champaign references jumped out at me.
Next I saw the Chumbley and I was back at CHS. I am sorry that I didn't know that Phyllis lived in Houston. Howard and I have, off and on, for 40-some years.
I am currently in the Parkway Place Retirement establishment, but come to the Buckingham from time to time to meet with some gals I used to see often when we first lived here.
I am still in touch with girls Phyllis knew when we were in school and I will enclose her obituary in the next round-robin letter I get from them: Mary Dillavou Gibson. Lois Jane Martin Durham, Anne Wiseheart Hansen, Laura Dexter Gordon, Ruth Conn Heath and Theresa Koehnemann Klingelhoffer. Including me that's just 7 of us out of our CTU group of 12. Since we all married Champaign (or Urbana) men, the group has stayed together with mini reunions over the years. Enough! I will see that they all know of Phyllis' passing,
My sympathies to you all. You all and Phyllis are in my prayers.
