Ray Hinze Obituary

RAY GENE HINZE 1941-2007 Ray Gene Hinze 65, died Sunday January 28, 2007 after a yearlong battle with cancer. He spent his final weeks surrounded by many cherished friends and family. Ray Gene was born in Groesbeck, Limestone County Texas December 18, 1941. He was preceded in death by his father Paul William Eldor Hinze, his mother Mary Muriel Hinze Simons, his stepfather Jake Simons and his stepbrother Robert Stanford. He is survived by his wife Linda Joyce Hinze, daughter Christina Lynn Hinze, son Stephen Lee Hinze, daughter-in-law Renee Soraiz Hinze, grandson Bryce Christopher Hinze, sister Linda Joy Dodson, half sister Paula Stallard, two step brothers, Tommy and Charles Stanford and numerous other relatives and friends. Ray Gene Hinze graduated '61 from La Vega High School in Waco, Texas where he excelled in Baseball, Track, Basketball and Football. In 2004 Ray Gene was honored by the Waco Tribune-Herald as a member of the All-Time Super Centex Football Team which noted that he was named All Super Centex for three years while in High School. During his athletic career at Texas A &M University `65 He was a 3 year Letterman, All Southwest conference in 1964, member of the Lettermen's "T" association and represented A&M in the East-West Shrine Game and All-American Game. He played both offense tackle and defense guard, rarely leaving the game. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills and played through the preseason. Ray went on to finish the season with the Wheeling Ironmen of the Continental Football League after being cut by the Buffalo Bills. A year as graduate assistant for the Texas Aggies coaching with Gene Stallings followed before Ray moved his family to Houston, Texas. He began his High School Coaching career at Sam Houston High School in H.I.S.D. where he spent ten of his twelve years as Head Football Coach. Ray said that he missed working directly with the athletes and became a defensive coordinator in 1979 for Jersey Village High School after moving to the city of Jersey Village in 1974. He remained at Jersey Village High School coaching golf as well as football until he retired in May of 2000 after 32 years in education. Although he had attained a Masters and Administrative Degree in Education; He had no difficulty turning down administrative positions during this time in order to continue what he loved most. His passion was teaching and coaching. Ray also loved his church family at Jersey Village Baptist Church where he was an active member. When not at school or church, Ray loved spending time with his family. He was a loving father, remarkable friend, admired coach, wonderful husband, caring brother, adored grandfather and an inspiration to those who knew him. His favorite Bible passage is found in I Corinthians 9:24-26. He was humble, kind and giving as He ran his race of life with dignity. He goes to be with the Lord leaving a legacy of cherished memories to those who knew him. His was a life well lived. A Memorial Service will be held on January 31 at 4:00 PM at Jersey Village Baptist Church 16518 Jersey Drive, Houston Texas 77040-1906. To the Hinze family, everyone who knew Coach, knew one thing: There was not a person at Jersey Village High School who had more integrity! Steve and Tina your dad was a great man and example for all of the young people whose lives he touched. We thank you for sharing him with us. Mrs. Hinze, you know better than us all what a true gentlemen and wonderful person that God has recruited. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Linda,Tina and Stephen,I have just learned of the passing of Ray. There is so much to say about a man who I taught with for so long. A man whom I had great respect and such fondness for. Having known the family for so many years, my heart is truely wounded. When Ray and I retired the same year, I knew that the students at JV had lost a wonderful coach and teacher. Both you and Ray gave so much to studens that were lucky enough to have crossed your paths. It is an honor to have been part of a teaching profession that had both Linda and Ray not only as colleagues, but also to have called them friends.
May God hold all of you in the palm of his hand.

I didn't know Ray Gene very well. I am the wife of his step-nephew Paul Stanford. I only met Ray Gene once or twice in person. He had a countenance about him that those of you who know him know very personally I am sure. I am sad that I didn't get to know him better. Your entire family is in my prayers, that God would ease the pain of your loss and allow you to rejoice in the fact that your loved one is with his Savior...and because of that you will see Ray Gene again.

My prayers are with the family. Because of Ray's faith, his walk through the valley of the shadow of death has now been overpowered by the Glorious Light of our Lord and Savior and he is finally happy and whole as he stands in the dazzling presence of our Lord. I'm sad for you, but happy for Ray Gene. To Ray Gene: Phil. 1:3.

To Ray Gene's family,
I went to LVHS with Ray and Linda. He was a gentle person and one of the nicest I ever met.
I know you are all missing him but he led such a full life. It is evident by the guest book entries. He is with the Lord now and not in pain. God Bless you all and know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Through out our lives there are special teachers/coaches that stand apart from the rest. Coach Hinze was one of those special individuals. I graduated in 1979 from Sam Houston and still to this day remember what a great person Coach Hinze was. He always gave his students the respect that he expected us to give him in return. Now that my children are in high school, I can state that the attention and dedication that Coach Hinze gave his students are very hard to come by. Please know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Linda, Tina and Stephen, I wish to express my sincere condolences on the loss of your husband and father. I had the opportunity to work with and get to know Ray and can truly say that God recruited a good soldier. Although Ray won't walk among us anymore his legacy is in tact. I appreciate God for giving me the opportunity to work with Ray and Linda (@Dean) and teach Tina and coach Stephen (@Dean). I will be praying for your family and I know that you all loved Ray but God loved him most. God bless each of you.
