Rebecca Askew Obituary

Rebecca Ann Askew
09/02/1939 - 06/23/2024
Rebecca Ann (Beckering) Askew, 84, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2024. She was born on September 2, 1939, in Centerville, Iowa to her beloved parents, Dr. Henry Hilliard Beckering and Olive Vega Beckering. Becky was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Hubert Carl Askew, Jr.; and her sister Sarah Jane Beckering. Becky led a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to family and friends.
Becky graduated from Texas Christian University with a degree in Education and was a lifelong member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was a teacher in Houston before her marriage to Hubert in 1963. Becky and Hubert enjoyed gardening, traveling, and enjoying time at the beach.
Family was everything to Becky. She was a devoted grandmother to all five grandkids and a constant source of support for them. 'Nana' and 'Papa' found great joy in attending all their grandkids' school activities, and volleyball, football, and softball games. In addition to spending time with family, Becky enjoyed reading, needlepoint, and time at the beach. Over her life, Becky dedicated her time volunteering for the local schools, and her church, hospital, and sorority.
She will always be remembered for her sharp sense of humor and clever wit that always left everyone laughing. Becky's legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will inspire all who knew her.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Ann Witmer, and husband, Rich J. Witmer; daughter, Susan Elizabeth Sanders, and husband, Mark A. Sanders of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Meghan E. Witmer of Austin, Texas, and Rachel A. Witmer, Jack M. Witmer, Taylor E. Sanders, Marshall A. Sanders all of Houston.
On Friday, July 12, 2024, Rebecca Ann Askew will be laid to rest in a private family service. The honorary pallbearers include Austin B. Davis, Mark A. Sanders, Marshall A. Sanders, Jack M. Witmer, and Rich J. Witmer. The family cordially invites her friends to celebrate her life and share fond memories with a visitation held from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Drive in Houston.
On Saturday, July 13, 2024, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77079, with a reception following the service in the adjacent Friendship Court. The family would like to thank everyone on the care team who helped Becky along this journey.
