Rhonda Thomas Obituary

Rhonda Thomas
12/11/1949 - 10/25/2025
Rhonda Carol Marshall Thomas was loud, beautiful, brilliant, stylish and the biggest personality in the room.

There could always be more jewelry. There could always be more food. There could always be better grades and somewhere, there was always a better hotel room. And Walter, her husband, was game for the adventure. And adventures they had - to places like Caribbean beaches, European countries and annual pilgrimages to the US Open in New York City.

In that search for more, she got multiple degrees, worked in education and poured her dreams and expectations into her daughters and grandchildren. She wanted us strong and self-sufficient and instilled in us that we were just as smart and just as deserving as anybody else. Her efforts have proven fruitful. She always made sure her children and grandchildren received the highest education she knew they deserved. When her daughter Zindia was starting first grade after moving back to Houston, the school wanted to place Zindia in kindergarten b/c of her age, Rhonda was not having it and made sure Zindia was placed in the first grade.

She was also caring. She took care of her mother, Cassinell Marshall, for years and at the end of her life. She worried about all of her family and wanted what was best for everyone. Especially her sister Cynthia who she spoke with every morning…Early.

As a child, she grew up with her mother and father, five other brothers and sisters, all the sister-aunts and whomever else came in and out of their small home and needed a good meal. Her job, even as a child, was making clothes. She knew her way around patterns and sewing machines and when her daughter Shawna played in an orchestra, she decided she could make a black velvet concert dress better than any store. And she did.

Rhonda is no longer in pain. That part is over. Maybe we thought Rhonda would beat the inevitable, because who would dare challenge her, but her smile, laugh and consistent cheekiness will live on through everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Walter, children Zindia (John) and Shawna; beloved grandchildren Justin and Alexandra, her sisters Eraca and Cynthia (Emmanuel), her aunts Katie and Faye and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. At a later date, the family will hold a true celebration of her life. Be ready with stories, we know you have them.

Rhonda the love of my cousin's life. Walter will hurt for the longest time, same as now but I pray his heart will heal in time. My prayers will not cease nor will my checking on him. Our God will give him strength through these difficult times. Family, I'm here day or night, call me anytime. Lastly, I'm glad Rhonda attended the celebration of my 80th Birthday, just 3 years ago. Love all !!!

Rhonda your personality was bigger than life itself. I will miss you, but God knows best. Rest my friend.

Rhonda, my neighbor, was larger than life. We belonged to the same bid whist club, and Rhonda had a very k conventional (some times aggravating)way of dealing the cards. She was the ultimate hostess and always made people welcome in her home. She had an eye for anything beautiful and expensive-- from fine china, crystal and jewelry... Rhonda loved good food and she was a chef in her own right. She liked it when I brought her my homemade fresh apple cake & banana pudding. She was kind and oh so generous. I thank God that I had to visit her in her home a few days before she passed away. I loved my friend, and I miss her so much.

My deepest condolences to her family and friends. Rhonda was an outstanding person. She always had a big smile on her face, and lit up the room wherever she went. She will be dearly missed.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs Rhonda Thomas. I first met Rhonda at the University of Houston where we completed our educational administration certification together. Rhonda was a brilliant student and had a personality which could fill up an entire room. We would later become colleagues and special education administrators. Rhonda was a great entertainer, a fabulous dresser ,a caring mother and devoted wife. She fought for the rights of students with disabilities to the best possible education. The world is better off because Rhonda passed our way. May her beautiful smile and laughter rest in peace.

Rhonda Carol Marshall Thomas is my sister. Every member of our family catered to her. Life will never be the same without her. Rhonda and I spoke to each other every morning and often throughout the day and night. Over half of everything I own are from ideas of Rhonda. She was smart, talented and willingly shared her skills. She loved her family and friends. She wanted the best for humanity! I will miss by best friend, my kind-hearted wonderful sister.
