Each February brings fondness and memories because Dr. Materson and I share the same birthday month.

I often think of him and remember his love for his family, patients and friends.

Thank you for keeping his memory alive. Sandra T. Hall

Dick was one of my main mentors in my career. He was able to push me beyond my own perceived limits and taught me how to excel in pain management. In all my lectures at conferences around the world, I acknowledge Dick Materson as one of my main mentors. His legacy will endure. I miss the long chats over a good class of wine, but above, his genuine interest in the wellbeing of others.

Another one of my fondest memories of Dr. Materson was when he asked me to chauffeur him to Howard University where he was invited to speak at the Dept of PM&R. Our conversation was always enlightening and he had so much wisdom and a plethora of knowledge to share. Those times are sorely missed.

I just became aware that Dick Materson passed away now already over a year ago. I will never forget the role Dick played in my professional life. What started with a wine and cheese party at Dick and Rosa's residence in Washington DC, where I was the only guest, grew into a close friendship and working relationship. Dick pushed me along and opened doors I did not know existed. We went our own ways, but reconnected a few years back, when he contacted me about an article I had published. We chatted for hours on the phone and it felt like we had never been apart. Dick was indeed greater than life, lived life to the fullest, and was not shy in sharing his tremendous knowledge and inspiration He was my first mentor and I will never forget what he did to help me in my career and as a person. I am so sorry that I did not get the message that he had left us. Now over a year later, I do send my best wishes to Rosa and the children.

Condolences to Mrs. Materson and their family. Dr. Materson always had a kind word to share with me and my daughter. He told us stories of his family and his youth, and always challenged us. He was a friend of my dad, and we looked forward to seeing him when we visited Eagle's Trace. We will miss him.

I fondly remember our chiding, but heated, political discussions. Dick and I became friends at Eagle's Trace and were always kidding each other about our political affiliation...he kidded me for being a Republican and I kidded him for being a Democrat. We talked frequently about our backgrounds and our research. I enjoyed hearing about all the work Dick did. He had a big impact on so many. I'm saddened by his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with Rosa, Larry and Lisa and their families.

I met Dr. Materson years ago when he came to Houston and joined Dr. Bar Sela. I did their transcription for years. He was such a kind-hearted man who always spoke tenderly about his family. He was my first client when I started my own business back in 1977 and introduced me to red wine. My condolences. I know he will be missed.
