Robert Bookman Obituary

Robert C. Bookman
1951-2015
ROBERT CHARLES BOOKMAN, 64, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015 in Houston. Mr. Bookman, known for his passion for jazz and blues music, will be laid to rest at the Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery on Saturday, March 21, 2015. Prior to interment there will be a visitation from 9:30 am until 11 am at the Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral service will begin promptly at 11 am following the visitation.
An avid electric bass guitar player, Robert loved the music of many jazz and blues players like Jeff Beck, Gregg Allman, Carlos Santana, B.B. King and perhaps most special to him, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jaco Pastorius. He along with other local musicians performed in Texas venues for numerous years, primarily in the Greater Houston area. Mr. Bookman was also known for his love of animals – especially stray cats and dogs- while taking special care to ensure their safety. Many remember his kind acts of love for those animals or creatures that were helpless. During football season, Robert could be heard rooting for his New Orleans Saints, a big switch from his earlier years as a Dallas Cowboys fan.
Mr. Bookman is preceded in death by his mother and father, Dorothy and Charles Bookman.
Robert leaves behind his wife of 41-years, Debra Frye Bookman; four sons, Mace (Yvette) and Mark (Theresa) of Austin, TX, Marek of Houston, TX and Manny (Amber) Bookman of Frisco, TX; one sister, Mary Bookman Laake of Austin, TX; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two nephews, one niece and a multitude of friends and other family members.
Pastor Vern Howard of Foundry United Methodist Church will officiate the chapel and graveside services at Woodlawn.

I will never forget him. Having spent 16 years with his son Mace and giving him one of his grandsons Travis Bookman, I am honored that Travis will carry on his bloodline and name and that I was the woman entrusted for this great honor. He always made me feel like I was the most beautiful woman on the planet whenever I was around him and always had concern for my well being. I will never forget whenever he would call our house to talk to Mace he would refer to Mace as "Old Crusty". I know heaven just got a rocking bass player like no other. Rest in Peace and I love you.

I met Robert in 1981 playing in a Blues Band and I sat in with the band for couple of songs and Robert wanted me to play several more tunes so I did and we became lifelong friends, as well as playing together in many more Bands over 35 years. He will always be remembered and missed ....He was one of my best friends. My heart and soul goes out to his family.

Robert was a quiet, gentle giant of a person who always thought of others first. I remember him best for his bass playing. Robert could play jazz or blues with bass lines that really made it all happen in the studio. He was a good man and he will be missed!
