Robert Gibson

Robert Joel Gibson, Longtime Houstonian Robert Joel Gibson, Sr. ("Bob," "Gibby," or a creative expletive to his friends), 80 prurient years of age, born in Ft. Worth, Texas on October 25th, 1933, finally succumbed to heart failure on July 2, 2014 in Wichita, Kansas, in the presence of family. The son of Joel Rae Gibson and Mildred Evelyn Bugher, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marion Evelyn Gibson, and is survived by his son, Robert Joel Gibson, Jr., of Wichita, Kansas, and daughter Marion Lee Hackworth of Dallas, Texas, as well as his daughter-in-law Mzia Dekanoidze Gibson, son-in-law Jeffrey Ray Hackworth, and grandchildren Marion Lillian Gibson, 10; Joel Givi Gibson, 9; Audie Joseph Hackworth, 3; and Ayda Evelyn Hackworth, 6 months. Given his predilection for impermanent relationships, there may be other survivors out there.
His friends and family will particularly remember his occasional torrents of vituperous abuse, which were generally cover for his fierce loyalty and protective instincts. They loved him fiercely in return.
He honorably served his country in the Army and later attended the University of Texas. He bled Burnt Orange and deeply, almost violently, resented his son's support of Texas A&M University, especially during football season.
Bob graduated from South Texas College of Law in 1967 and proudly defended the interests of his clients and friends during his 45+ year legal career. He appreciated a good lawyer joke and was the inspiration for more than a few. He loved Houston, but never forgot his West Texas upbringing. It would take a McMurtry novel to adequately describe his force of nature personality and fascinating life.
He was thrilled to have lived long enough to meet his grandchildren despite a life dedicated to sinful pursuits. His only regret (at least that he admitted to) was that he wouldn't get ten more years to watch them grow up.
His family is grateful to the staff at Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita, KS, for their excellent care. Per Bob's request, his remains were cremated and he is to be buried at sea on Sep. 20, 2014. Close friends, family, and Scotland's whisky distillers, who are surely in mourning, are invited to attend. Prayers for his eternal soul are solicited.
