Dr. Robert Leroy Hershberger, 91 of Houston, went to be with his Lord Thursday, March 1, 2012, after a brief illness. He was born June 20, 1920 in La Porte, Texas to A.L. Hershberger and Daisy May Hovey Hershberger. Valedictorian of his class, he graduated in 1937 from La Porte High School, and then earned a Bachelor's degree in music from Sam Houston State University in 1941. He was band director at Sour Lake High School. He voluntarily entered the United States Navy in 1941 and distinguished himself as a Naval Officer, flying B-24s in many campaigns in the Pacific. He was a decorated veteran. Included among his awards is the Distinguished Flying Cross. After an honorable discharge from the navy in 1946, he entered Duke Medical School, graduating in 1951. He practiced internal medicine from 1954 to 2000, in the Houston area and served several generations of families. He was on the faculty at Baylor Medical School and was on the medical staff at Methodist Hospital for many years. He is survived by his sister Joy Richard. He was the beloved uncle to Ty Ann Noyes, Tyrone Richard, Mark Richard and Lanny Hershberger. He also leaves behind many great and great-great nieces and nephews whom he loved. He will be missed by the many to whom he showed great kindnesses and generosity of friendship. He loved the Lord and lived a life worthy of the words "Well done, my good and faithful servant…Come and share your master's happiness (Matthew 25:21)… and dwell in the House of the Lord forever.(Psalm 23:6) The family extends their appreciation to the wonderful care givers with Temporary Home Care for their loving care and devoted support. Dr. Hershberger was a trusted, caring doctor and wonderful person. Besides providing excellent care, I always loved the twinkle in his eye and his keen wit. My family truly appreciated his years of service since he treated three generations of our family. I even remember him making house calls for my grandparents, Robert and Myrtle Byrn. Joy, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dr.Hershberger was a wonderful friend to our family. He became close friends with my Mothers brother Jack Traub- another Naval Pilot in World War II. Unfortunately he was lost to the war but Dr. Hershberger never failed to send my grandmother flowers every mothers day on behalf of Jack. Meant a lot to her and was a great example to all of us! What a wonderful man. A priveledge to have known him!
Sincerely
Karl R. Schultze Son of Barbara Traub Schultze

I have never met a doctor as loving and caring as Dr Hershberger. He faithfully cared for my dear great aunt and rounded on her from July 7, 1992 to Nov 13, 1992 at Methodist hospital. After her passing he sent the sweetest card. Our loss is heavens gain. Condolances to the family of this great man.

Our father, Charles James and Leroy were very good friends in LaPorte. Dad spoke very highly of Leroy. A year ago last February, my sisters and I visited with Leroy at the visitation for our father at George Lewis Funeral Home. We were so touched that he attended and we enjoyed the stories that he shared about their days in LaPorte and Houston.

My most sincerest condolences for your loss. Dr. Hershberger took superb care of me when I had 5 ulcers back in 1990; he even gave me a shopping bag full of medicine when I was unable to pay for my (then) very expensive prescriptions (he had a closet full of drugs, courtesy of the drug company reps giving him samples). My Mom worked for him for many years previous to my hospitalization; he took care of her when she was sick and he also doctored my younger brother when he had his appendix removed in 1974. A fine old country doctor (as he used to tell me) who will be sorely missed.

We always loved and appreciated Dr. Hershberger. We were patients of his until he retired. There will never be another doctor like him.
