Ron Stone Obituary

RON STONE, who touched so many lives in Houston and across Texas in his career as a broadcaster, historian, teacher, and civic volunteer, died Tuesday, the 13th of May 2008, at his home in Houston, surrounded by his family. He was 72. Ron Stone was an Oklahoman by birth, and a Texan by choice. He was born in Hanna, Oklahoma, on the 6th of April 1936, the son of Tom and Eva Stone. Ron majored in Speech at East Central State Teachers' College in Ada, Oklahoma, where he acted in school plays and met a fellow drama student, Patsy Thompson. Ron and Pat married on the 26th of June 1955, beginning a warm and loving marriage that lasted 53 wonderful years. His remarkable broadcasting career began in Ada where he worked as a disc jockey and newscaster on radio station KADA. After graduating from ECU in 1956, Ron moved to television as news anchor for Ada's KTEN-TV. He worked at several stations in both Oklahoma and Kansas and gained the attention of Houston newsman Dan Rather. In 1961, Rather hired Ron as an anchor and reporter at KHOU-TV. Except for a brief stint in New York as an NBC radio newscaster, Ron would spend the remainder of his career in Houston, a city he loved. He spent countless hours volunteering in the community, with his charitable work perhaps best exemplified by his efforts for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). After moving to KPRC-TV in 1973, Ron began hosting the annual MDA telethon and was involved in numerous fundraisers to fight that disease. He was a strong believer in the preservation of Texas history and culture and showcased his interest by riding for many years with the Salt Grass Trail Riders during the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Ron's commitment to his community was matched by his dedication to his craft. His career as a reporter and anchor took him around the world, from an earthquake in Guatemala to the Great Wall of China to what he called his most memorable assignment, covering the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. He also loved taking viewers across Texas as the host of the long-running Eyes of Texas. In an article in the Houston Chronicle he was referred to as "perhaps the most popular and revered anchor Houston has ever seen." Ron had a lifelong passion for sports and in the 1960s began broadcasting Southwest Conference football games for the Humble Oil radio network. In the 1970s he teamed with his great friends Ron Franklin and Dave Ward to form a now-legendary broadcast team for the Houston Oilers radio network. Ron retired from KPRC-TV in 1992 and started an award-winning video production firm, Stonefilms of Texas. He continued his love of writing and history and authored several books on Texas history, including The Book of Texas Days. After gaining a Master's Degree in Liberal Arts from Houston Baptist University, Ron was named an Adjunct Professor in the MLA program. He was also an Artist-in-Residence at the University of St. Thomas. Of the many awards Ron won in his life, he was perhaps most proud of a singular honor given to him by the Sons of the Republic of Texas when he was named a Knight of San Jacinto. With the busy schedule he kept and the hectic life he led, Ron never forgot his most important roles: as loving husband, devoted father, and doting grandfather. Ron Stone was preceded in death by his parents, the late Tom and Eva Stone, and grandchildren, the late Sarah and Elizabeth Payne. He is survived by his wife, Patsy, and children, Robin Brown and husband Paul; Julie Payne and husband Leon; Ron Stone Jr. and wife Michelle; and Billy Stone and wife Vicki; his grandchildren, Katharine Baldo O'Brien and husband James; Kent Baldo; William and Mary Katharine Payne; Madeline and Caroline Stone; William Stone Jr., Lainie and Jack Stone. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce Murdock and husband Jim, and a host of family, and friends. Ron's family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of M. D. Anderson Cancer Center for their care and compassion. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock this afternoon until eight o'clock this evening, Thursday, the 15th of May, in the Library of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. The memorial service will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 16th of May, in the Sanctuary of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive in Houston, where the Rev. Dr. David Peterson, Senior Pastor, and the Rev. Dr. M. Douglas Harper, Jr. will serve as officiants. Honorary pallbearers are the citizens of Houston whom Ron loved so much. Immediately following the service, all are invited to join the family for a reception in the adjacent Fellowship Hall. A private interment service, for the family to attend, will be conducted at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston. In lieu of usual remembrances, contributions in memory of Ron Stone may be directed to the Ron Stone Foundation for the Enhancement and Study of Texas History, 1900 South Blue Bell Rd., Brenham, TX, 77833; or to the Houston Food Bank, 3811 Eastex Frwy., Houston, TX, 77026. "What is beyond love? The answer is nothing. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never ends." "Good night, neighbors."

This is so strange to say but as a child ron stone with my first celebrity crush.. I even remember at the time thinking this is weird he's a newscaster.. But yet there it was.. I mean I was a child but I was infatuated by him. I am.
Now sixty years old. And I have come to realize that ron stone reminded me of my daddy.. Thank you simply thank you.. I'm so glad I got to see this person and then later in my life realize how much he impacted me and my family.

Robin, I remember your dad quite well. I always thought of him whenever I needed my own father, who died several years ago. Darius and I send our regards to your family.

For the family of Ron Stone: I have just found out that he had passed away, I felt stunned and in disbelief. Even as I write this, my heart is heavy because I have lost yet another member of my Texas family. And, Texas has lost another one of her sons. I have been away from Houston for way too many years, but never has Houston or TEXAS been out of me. We grew up listening to Ron Stone, first at Ch. 11, then on Ch. 2 AND on The Eyes of Texas. My grandmother thought the sun rose and set in Ron Stone. We shall not see the likes of your journalism again. I remember the honesty, the warmth and the good nature. I remember the night Sid Lasher passed away and also you're joking with an "old trail hand" about boots being made "out of something dead". I remember A LOT. WAY TOO MUCH to be noted here. But, THANK YOU and GOOD NIGHT, NEIGHBOR.

Patsy and family,

We have wonderful memories of your family when we were neighbors in Westbury on West Airport Blvd. We also enjoyed Ron's various television projects when we lived in Houston. Little did we know our paths would cross again as Ron was the emcee for HBU's Alumni Dinner as Steve received a distinguished alumnus award. Maybe, he told you we caught up on each other's family history that night.

We now live in Springfield, OR and saw the notice in the HBU News. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the Stone Family,
I wish to express my sympathy in the the homegoing of Mr. Stone.

Ron and I arrived at Channel 2 at about the same time in 1973 (my first "tour" was in 1968-69). He was one of the kindest people I've ever met in this eg-centric business; never thinking more highly of himself than he ought. I think that NYC experience reminded him of what really matters and it isn't fame. It is having friendships and loving the community that loves you back. We had lost touch in recent years, but I will always remember the influence he had on Houston and the influence Houston had on him. God bless his family and may they experience God's peace.

I remember when Hurricane Alicia was coming toward Houston. I was fifteen and had never been through a storm. I can still hear Ron saying " We have been through things like this before neighbors and we will get through this together" It was so comforting...what a special man

My prayers are with Ron's family. I grew up with Ron Stone while I watched "The Eyes of Texas" , the evening news and listening to his football broadcasts. I moved to New York City, but my memories of Houston are filled with the warmth and love that Ron Stone helped me form. I am forever indebted. God keep you and hold you Mr. Stone.

I had the pleasure of watching and listening to Ron Stone as he presented the news. When he changed stations, so did I. I enjoyed Ron Stone's kind mannerisms and his respect for everyone. This is just one of the reasons he was so respected himself.

I pray that Mr. Stone's family will receive the strength from God to handle the grief they must feel.

May they soon allow their good memories to replace the sadness that now fills their hearts.

Stone Family,
I watched Ron Stone on TV as a young child in Ada, Oklahoma on KTEN, Channel 10. His warm, generous spirit touched me back then and in 1975 when we moved to Houston Texas, it was like being at home again with Ron Stone at the news desk. May God Bless you all at this time.

Dear Robin,

Here's hello from an old Andy Anderson classmate you'll probably not remember. I talked also with Patty Yater (do you remember her) recently and she said that you came to one of her birthday parties. Obviously many years have passed and your family moved away from the Westbury area in the 60's.

God's grace and best to you and your entire family during this time,

May 17, 2008

Oh, that we had present news people like Ron Stone, who always left us with hope instead of constant negative thoughts. Even when things were bad, he saw the positive side. That was because in our Lord Jesus Christ, he knew God would lead us through the darkness. He was such a good example to all of us and such a delight to listen to all his tales about Texas, my beloved state. Our prayers are with everyone of you, for God's strength during these hours of longing and sadness. God gave us tears to refresh us during times of sorrow, and we all shed many at this time. Praise God we shall see him again.

I grew up watching Mr. Stone. He was of that kinder, gentler time that I miss so much. No one giving the news today will ever have the same rapport with their viewers that Mr. Stone did. May Mr. Stone's family find mercy in his passing and peace in their hearts. Goodnight Neighbor, you shall be missed.

Greetings Family and Friends:

I NEVER met Mr. Ron Stone in my entire life and I am 62 years old. However, I loved the adventures he allowed my mind to explore through the world events as seen through HIS eyes and his contribition(s) via media.

Each experience provides us with a taste of but a few dishes from the Banquet of Life.

Praise God for the Gift of the Life of
Mr. Ron Stone. Another soldier has gone home.

Peace Within. Joyonya

I was fortunate to hear Mr. Stone speak at my high school graduation commencement in Friendswood in 1975. I do remember him making many references to his family in his words to us. Like many others, I too grew up watching Ron Stone with my family. My grandmother especially enjoyed his years at Channel 2. The 6 and 10 o'clock news was like a sacred time for her. May God bless your family as you deal with the loss of this great man.

From the outpouring of sentiments it's obvious that Ron Stone was dearly loved by all whose lives he touched. I am honored to be included in that group. As a journalism student at Lee College in 1975, I was privileged to be in the audience for a 75-minute presentation by Ron Stone - for anyone to captivate my attention that long is amazing. I will forever remember that day and all those newscasts we were privileged to share. My heart, hope and prayers go out to the Stone family.

Our sympathies go out to the whole Stone family. We lived in Houston for over 31 years and Ron was our favorite newscaster and we enjoyed all he did on television. He and Doug Johnson were the best and could always make us laugh.
Thanks for being such a good news reporter. You were enjoyed by many.

When I heard that Ron Stone had died, I couldn't believe it. Losing Ron Stone is like losing a part of my past. I went to the same school as Ron's daughter Julie, and I remember many years ago standing in line to see a movie, and Julie and one of her friends were behind me, Then all of sudden her father Ron walked up. He said hello, and I remember talking with him and feeling like I had known him my whole life.

My prayers and thoughts are with the family of Ron Stone, but especially to Julie & her husband, Leon Payne. [I also tended school with Leon from 1st-6th].
May find comfort in the fact that your father was so loved.

I am on a business trip in Portland and just found out about Ron Stone's passing. He was one of the reasons I chose to pursue a degree in Journalism, because I became a news junkie in the fourth grade when I started watching the 5 p.m. newscast every day at a time when my friends were watching cartoons. In junior high, Ron came to hand out certificates for something at my school, and I was thrilled to get to meet him. I still have a picture of the two of us. He brought a warmth and expertise to local news that has never been the same since he left, and I always hoped for his return to the airwaves.

I was sad for me when he retired, but happy for him and his family to share more valuable time together. I was really hurt, when I heard of his death on the news. Bless all of you, and thank you for sharing him with so many!

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

To the Stone family - Please count mine among the many prayers for your family's loss. I grew up listening to Ron on the news - his voice always reminds me of home. And always made me smile whenever I heard it. He was the best, and genuine in a profession that lacks that quality the most. That's what endeared him to us all. I had brief privileges in my life to meet Mr Stone. As a child growing up I would gather donations for the MDA telethon and then deliver it to the studio. Mr Stone was always there and would help me poor the money into the fishbowl. He was such a generous man. His smile I can still remember today. His knowledge and love for history helped spark my own interest and I never missed an episode of the Eyes of Texas. I later went on to get a degree in history largely because of the fascinating stories he told and the way he told them. To his family and friends I offer my condolences and pray for God’s comfort for their loss. The city of Houston was blessed to have him with us for so many years. There will never be another like Ron Stone. His stories we will carry with us and the memory of his laughter will bring a smile to our faces for years to come.

Ron Stone Jr. was so gracious as to treat me to a private tour of the Channel 2 archives in the summer of 1988 as he transferred the precious old news film to videotape. I was studying toward a journalism degree at UH at the time, and the seamless example of Mr. Stone Sr. was a reason I chose the field. In the vein of Paul Berlin at KQUE-FM, "The Scene at 5" stands as a classic of broadcasting. I never got to meet Mr. Stone Sr., but often say I was once "in the same room" with him - as part of the audience when he and Jan Carson hosted the Christmas show at 1st Baptist Church of Houston. May he rest in peace.

Warm Summer Sun

Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.

I grew up watching Ron Stone everyday, whether it was Channel 11 or Channel 2. I never wanted to leave the Houston area as I would lose him as my favorite reporter/anchorman. I was a big fan too, of the "Eyes of Texas". I wish to extend my sincere sympathy to his family. We were all so fortunate to have him here with us. "Good night neighbor", you will be sorely missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Stone family. Ron Stone was one of a kind. Houston is going to miss him. He was loved by all.

Mr. Stone new my dad who was head of the SPCA back in the 70;s. Once a week my dad would be on Channel 2 with Mr. Stone showing animals and talking about the adoption program. When my father (Maj. Jerrol Lowe) passed away in 1973, Mr. Stone paid tribute to him. I will always remeber that because he and my dad became friends. Mr. Stone enriched the lives of so many people. With his signature sign off "Good Night Neighbors", he will always hold a special place in all of our hearts.

To the Stone Family - My heart felt a sharp and painful stab upon reading in the Austin paper about Ron Stone's passing. What a wonderful, genuine person he seemed to be. We watched him every night over the 20+ years we lived in Houston. Coming into our home every night gave us the impression he belonged there. And so he did. Just so you know he was loved and cherished as a family member. We also so enjoyed his partnership w/Ron Franklin and Dave Ward for the Oilers! They were great; the other Ron still is and I'm sure Dave is as well. Thanks for the memories.............our sincerest condolences and sympathy to y'all.

Houston and the journalistic community have lost a dynamic person, a beloved reporter and historian, and one admired for his trustworthy character. We will always remember Ron Stone and his sincere dedication to "honesty in the news".

What a shock to learn of Ron's passing. I have always considered him my mentor. At KPRC, in 1982, I went from news intern to Associate Producer of The Scene at 5. Still a college kid, I had no business in that role.

Ron was a great sport about it and always encouraged me. I ended up producing and working with Ron on various shows through most of the 80's. I learned something about news, writing, live tv and life from Ron every single day. Mostly, I learned to laugh.

There were certain things that Ron cherished: Texas history, a good (often bad) joke, the chance to tell a good story ... but above all, his family.
I am fortunate that I still make my living writing. For that, I owe Ron my gratitude. What a great teacher.

For Patsy and the rest of the family, my prayers are with you. I hope you take heart in knowing you were adored by a man who was admired by so many.

I feel blessed that I had an opportunity to participate in the care of Mr. Stone. Nursing him was truly an honor as I told him when we said good-bye. The man that we, as Houstonians, came to love on television was the same off-screen: brilliant, caring, and warm-hearted. I was so moved by the great love established in your family. God bless you during your time of grief from your "P4 Family".

To the whole Stone Family:

I feel as if a dark cloud is now over our beloved city of Houston and the whole State of Texas. I grew up watching Ron Stone, Doug Johnson, and Ron Franklin. I had the pleasure of knowing Billy Stone and Ron Franklin, Junior from Lee High. I think of Mr. Stone and I think of my uncle that passed away of the exact same causes. We cannot linger on the sadness that we are all feeling. We must embrace what a wonderful man and humanitarian Ron Stone was and the legacy he leaves behind will be Houston's saving grace and a State of Texas treasure. Houston's broadcasting has never been the same. Ron Stone conveyed the news without any of today's current sensationalism. I believe I only met him once but to be honest I cried watching all of the news coverage of his death. It is like losing your own father, uncle, friend, or whomever made a lasting and continuous impact on your life. We should all live our lives like Ron Stone did. The world would be a much better place.

Billy--To you and your family, my deepest condolences!! May the cherished memories that you have bring your comfort and peace during this sad and difficult time. Knowing how many people across the country thought that your father was an outstanding human being!!

God Bless All of You. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

To the Stone family:
It's very hard to lose a family member who is also a Texas legend.
Was a fan of "The Eyes of Texas", for years ... and then, when Ron retired, he was/is still the Chairman of the GO TEXAN Partnership Program Advisory Board at the Texas Department of Agriculture. His patience with and the time he gave to Texas and to us was amazing. His emcee work as the voice of the Family Land Heritage Ceremony will always be remembered by the farmers and ranchers of Texas and TDA staff.
He lifted the ceremony up many notches in professionalism and style.
God Blessed Texas with his own hand, and with the talent and personality of Ron Stone.
As Shake sings: "Say, welcome stranger, Texas means 'friend'".
So glad he gave time to TDA.
Godspeed, buddy.
