Ronald Cohen Obituary

Ronald D. Cohen
1942-2016
Ronald D. Cohen, 74, passed Oct. 24, 2016 after a sudden brain hemorrhage. Surrounded by his loving family, he slipped peacefully away to be with his son, Reuben Summerlin.
A brilliant, thoughtful, kind man, consummate problem solver, voracious reader, remarkable story teller and hysterical jokester, Ron was an attorney, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend – and amazing at all he did. He was the son of the late Seymour "Slugger" Cohen and Shirley Cohen, who passed away three months ago. Survivors include wife Sherry Summerlin and sons Josh and Daniel Summerlin and Alex Cohen; grandchildren Grayson Cohen, Leah, Ike, Jack, Jake and Evan Summerlin; siblings Farryl Bernell, Laurie Fickman and Amy and Jerry Shannon; numerous nephews and nieces and his law partner, soul brother and best friend, Bill Small.
It is hard to sum up a life that has so many highlights.
At 23 he graduated from the University of Texas Law School after completing a Plan II undergraduate major there. He practiced law in New York and Washington D.C. for the Small Business Administration before settling back in Houston and co-founding Cohen and Small with Bill in 1977. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
He favored big kisses on the cheek and huge hugs whenever he saw you, and he never gave you the correct greeting card: "Happy 50th Birthday" to his 12-year-old nephew at Hanukah. He was happiest welcoming his whole family to his and Sherry's peaceful stretch of earth in the country.
Not hyperbole, Ron Cohen was the best of us, the best of us all.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00AM, Wednesday, October 26, 2016 in the Kagan-Rudy Chapel at Emanu El Memorial Park 8341 Bissonnet Houston, Texas 77074.

Ron was such a dear family friend, my mother Virginia and father Bill treasured his friendship very much. He was always willing to help, no matter how difficult the situation. He was particularly supportive during Virginia's last years, for which I will be forever greatful. I know her spirit will be welcoming to his, where ever they meet up again.

What a good and caring friend he was, especially to my Mother, Virginia Failing. I know she welcomed him with open arms. My thoughts are with you. He was one of a kind. Molly Lang - Ca.

Ronnie was my Texas Law classmate, my dear roomie - sharing our dreams before we slept, our Best Man, my sports, political and medical buddy, my legal advisor, my key sharer of ideas and, most importantly, values.

His loss has put me into a deep hole of grief, which he would insist I climb out of to remember the shared joys and adventures of our lives touching.

I will miss him forever and will climb back up to rejoice for all the good times and great conversations we shared in a half -century of cherished friendship.

Forever, my Best Man.
