Shelley Grover-Pletscher Obituary

SHELLEY ANN GROVER-PLETSCHER July 1, 2009 Shelley was proud to be a native Texan, born in Houston on October 11, 1950 to Claire and Walter Grover. Shelley and her sisters and twin brother grew up surrounded and loved by her many Grover aunts, uncles and cousins and those cherished childhood relationships continued throughout Shelley's adult life. Shelley was educated at St. Anne's, Duchesne and University of St. Thomas: her love of learning was an ongoing and passionate part of her life. No relationship was more important or influential in Shelley's life than the one she shared with her husband of 24 years, Werner Pletscher. Their love for one another was only matched by their shared love of travel. Their last trip together was September, 2008 to Cape Town and Franschhoek, South Africa and later traveling on safari. Shelley was deeply interested in other cultures and world affairs and each trip that she and Werner took together always brought further study. Shelley loved to cook and her wide circle of international friends were frequent guests in Shelley and Werner's home, sampling the latest recipe brought back from various trips. During Shelley's 30 years in the workplace, she was employed as an administrator at Houston's British Consulate, then Pennzoil, later at the Houston Oilers organization and finally at Enron. In 2002 Shelley was diagnosed with cancer: Multiple Myeloma. Despite the frequently severe and numerous treatments that Shelley received over that 7 year period, she became an active and informed member of myeloma support groups both in Houston and worldwide. Shelley made herself available to newly diagnosed myeloma patients, offering counsel and comfort to those new friends even as she battled her own illness. Shelley is survived by her husband Werner Pletscher, his parents, Gottfried and Hedi Pletscher, his brothers and their families who all live in Schaffhausen, Switzerland; Shelley's mother Claire Grover, sisters Pam Grover Cannon and spouse Victor Cannon, Judy Grover and partner Bob Blough, brother Greg Grover and numerous beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 1:00, July 12th at Rothko Chapel. Please do not send flowers; arrangements are not permitted at Rothko. In Shelley's memory donate to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation: www.multiplemyeloma.org and to Houston Hospice: www.houstonhospice.org.

Shelley was my husband's assistant at the Pennzoil Products Co. Her cheerful efficiency was invaluable in attaining results and reaching goals. She stayed in touch after we retired and she and Werner visited us in Inverness. CA. while she was in remission. I told her she looked more beautiful than ever. After my husband died, she continued to call me with her loving sympathy. My deepest condolences go to Werner and the families. We have lost a true Angel.

Shelley and Werner are really special people to us.

Soon after my Evelyn was advised in 2005 to consider a stem cells transplant in her battle with multiple myeloma, mutual friend Linda Gist put her in contact with Shelley. From the beginning, Shelley was a cheerleader and became a strong soul sister. Until someone has encountered this sort of problem, you cannot know how much a mentor and confidant can mean.

When Evelyn was getting her transplant at M.D.Anderson Cancer Center, Shelley was there holding her hand. Shelley knew. She had been through two such experiences.

In the months to come, these two talked weekly and we often visited when coming to Houston for MDACC appointments. Shelley, as others have noted, was beautiful inside and out. It was consoling to me to know that Evelyn had someone she could visit like a sister.

Evelyn and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity of this friendship with Shelley and Werner. While it was much too short in time, it had depth.

We feel blessed but are torn by such a deep loss.

To Werner and the families, we express our deepest and sincerest sympathy.

I first met Shelley in late 1962 when we started 7th grade at Duchesne. Following our school years we lost touch but happily reconnected six years ago while she was organizing the reunion for Duchesne's class of 1968. Was I impressed with all that she'd done and who she had become. Fiercely independent, and aggressively interested in learning, understanding and exploring the world around her, she lived energetically and fully. It seemed incredible to me how Multiple myloma was hardly an obstacle to any of this. In addition, she always opened her door when I needed someone to listen or lean on. She sure taught me alot and I will miss her greatly.
