Shirley Stein Obituary

Shirley Siegel Stein beloved wife, mother, mimi, sister, aunt, and friend to many passed away October 20 surrounded by her loving family. Shirley was born May 17, 1939 in Houston to Isadore and Frieda Siegel. She was a magnificent woman who lived a magnificent life. Shirley is survived by her adoring husband and soul mate of 53 years Bruce, her three sons Gary, Bradley, and David and their wives Tracy, Robin, and Andrea, and the grandchildren who were the center of her life, Sam, Ben, Ellie, Steven, Sarah, Julie, and Jonathan. She is also survived by her sister Reva Shapiro and her brother in law Dr. Milton Nirken and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Allene Nirken and Bruce's parents Johnny and Sarah Stein and sister in law Sharlene.
Shirley was the definition of a Jewish woman of valor. She lived life on her own terms with Bruce by her side every step of the way. She dedicated her life to what she believed in: her family, her dear friends and the community. She and Bruce were married in 1960 and began their journey together. They founded Triple-S Steel, a true family business. The children joined the company shortly after birth.
Shirley always had a passion for music. After graduation from San Jacinto High School, she attended the St Louis Conservatory of Music. She sang in the chorus of the Houston Grand Opera and later served on the Board. Her love of the performing arts drove her to co-found Theater Under the Stars (TUTS) in 1968. She was honored for her devotion to the arts community by being presented with the Cultural Leader of the Year in 1974.
Shirley and Bruce loved their Houston community. They gave much of their time and resources supporting numerous philanthropies.
Shirley's devotion to family was her highest commitment. She spent much of her life caring for them. Her elderly father and father in law both were cared for by her and lived with her and Bruce. She also shared a special relationship with Bruce's sister Sharlene. As a mother she challenged, motivated, and inspired her three sons. Her daughters in law were the daughters she never had. She was not a mother in law, she was their best friend and confidant. Her shining stars were her 7 grandchildren. Once they were born it became her mission to lovingly transmit to them her values and beliefs and the importance of love and family.
Shirley was affectionately known at work as Ms. Shirley. She was a life force within the company. Employees, customers, and everyone attached to Triple- S saw Ms. Shirley as the real face of the company. Her involvement in every aspect of the business was a true key to its success.
The family wishes to thank Jose, Marcella, Rick and Moses Ramirez, William and Filla Hernandez. Dr Alan Hoffman, Dr Carl Schmulen and the entire staff of the 23rd floor at St. Luke's Hospital for their extraordinary skill and compassion. In addition the family extends special gratitude to Clarence and Iranell Stewart and Toni Espinosa.
Following a private burial, a memorial service will be held at 4 pm at Congregation Beth Yeshurun, 4525 Beechnut. Honorary Pallbearers are Diana Brackman, Martin and Kelli Fein, Milton and Rikki Frankfort, Buster and Karen Freedman, Walter and Punkin Hecht, Alan and Judy Hoffman, Buddy and Lorraine Horwitz, Barry and Judith Kaufman, Richard Leibman, Steve and Sherry Radack, Regina Rogers, Arthur and Joyce Schechter, Tony and Donna Vallone, Bobby and Stanley Weinstein.
Tributes in memory of Shirley can be made to Seven Acres, Aishel House, or the Rabbi Rosen Discretionary Fund at Congregation Beth Yeshurun.

It was my honor and privilege to have been one of Mrs. Stein's caregivers at St. Luke's Hospital. To my humble observation, the relationship between Mrs. Stein and her husband was, simply put, the definition of Love. And even in the midst of trying times, that Love was shared with others: Mr. Stein, who was always at his wife's side, never failed to give me a hug, rather than a handshake.
They enriched my life by their example and actions, and will be in my heart always.
