Stanley Bayless Obituary

Stanley Netherwood Bayless passed away suddenly on Friday, the 17th of August 2012, in Frisco, Colorado. Sandy was born in Houston, Texas on the 12th of March 1950, and was a fifth generation Houstonian. He was a graduate of Wilbraham Academy in Wilbraham, Massachusetts and Washington and Lee University where he played soccer and was a member of Sigma Chi.
Sandy was a respected figure in the insurance industry in Houston where his career spanned close to 40 years and focused primarily on marine and energy marketing, production, and claims. He was a member of the Houston Marine Insurance Seminar Planning Committee for a number of years and was seminar chair for two years. He was a member of The Forest Club and served in previous years on the Board of Directors.
An avid reader and student of military history, he was a skilled model-maker who in his boyhood developed a life-long hobby of building small scale, historically accurate reproductions of World War II aircraft.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Elizabeth Garrett Bayless; daughter, Catherine Bayless Brunks and her husband Eric; daughter, Page Netherwood Bayless; sister, Amy Bayless Bacon; niece Amanda Lytz Hellman and her husband John; nephews Walter Raymond Lytz, III, John Blakeshaw Lytz, Alexander John Bacon, III, and Daniel O'Connell Bayless Bacon, and great-nephews Jack Haywood Hellman and Michael Joseph Hellman; and great-niece Sarah Evelyn Hellman. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Gordon Lee Garrett and his wife Chesley; niece Chesley Garrett Matthews and her husband John; nieces Elizabeth Haid Garrett and Edith Lee Garrett and great-niece Elizabeth Ramsey Matthews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel O'Connell Bayless and Annelle Netherwood Bayless and his sister, Haywood Bayless Lytz.
The memorial service will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Thursday, the 23rd of August, at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church, 6221 Main Street in Houston, where the Rev. Dub Brooks, Associate Rector, is to officiate.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to the Sandy Bayless Memorial Scholarship Fund at Wilbraham & Monson Academy, 423 Main St, Wilbraham, MA, 01095.

Goodbye, friend. I remember you from Wilbraham days. I never knew you were a modeler, as I am. You will have good company in heaven, I'll see you there someday.

Whether in a business or social setting Sandy was always a pleasure to be with. He had a great sense of humor & a great sense of life's values. We will not forget Sandy & the warmth of our relationship.

Sandy was a great character with a superb sense of humor. I shall miss our conversations as Sandy was a true raconteur. His generosity was also second to none and I feel that I must recount one time when we were discussing the art of WWII aircraft model making. I happened to comment to him that my own father had been a model maker for more than fifty years, but of all the models he had made, there was one of a WWII RAF flying boat that he had been unable to obtain. I thought nothing more of this until I returned from a business trip some weeks later, to find a complete kit of said flying boat (from the 1960's) lying on my office chair, with a greeting from Sandy and asking me to pass the kit to my father in the UK with Sandy's best wishes. When handed to my father back in England, he was extremely touched by Sandy's kindness and was therefore very upset when I advised him of Sandy's passing. A great man.

His sweet smile, always a hello remembering my name, a mentoring word here & there over the years - those meant a lot to a 'girl' like me 'in the industry.' God bless you, Sandy - and I hope you and those before you are enjoying a glorious reunion up above.

Sandy - you will be dearly missed by "Ames". You were one of the first people I met when I came to Houston 30+ yrs ago and I loved you and Elizabeth dearly (via Bruce & Lee Heller and my sis Deb). Those early memories are priceless and my heart goes out to Elizabeth and the girls as I know you what a great dad you were to them. God speed my friend until we meet again.

Catherine, Eric and the entire Bayless bunch, we are so heartbroken about the passing of your father, husband, and friend. From the short amount of time we spent with him at your wedding we were certainly able to tell that he was an amazing man. We wish we could have spent more than just a weekend with him, but from those few days we learned how obsessed he was with his family, how proud he was of you Catherine, and how much fun he had celebrating your marriage to Eric. What a great moment in time! We love you so much and are here if you ever need anything! Love you!
