Sylvia Collins Obituary

Sylvia Patricia Wagnon Collins
1934-2017
Sylvia Patricia Wagnon Collins peacefully passed away in the early morning hours on Sunday, June 25, 2017 with her sons by her side. Sylvia was born in Duncan, Oklahoma, on December 6, 1934, to Alice and Harvey Wagnon as their ninth child. On April 17, 1960, she married Donald R. Collins at Bellaire Baptist Church in Bellaire, Texas, and together they had two sons. In December 1979, she earned her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Houston. She and her family were charter members of Champion Forest Baptist Church. At the time of her passing, she and Don were members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Sylvia served as a school room mother, Cub Scout den mother, Sunday school teacher, member of AAUW, and president of the Northampton Garden Club. She was so proud when the Klein ISD Board of Trustees chose to name Klein Collins High School as recognition of the family's contributions to the school district. She was also honored when the 55 acre "Cypresswood Park" was named "Don and Sylvia Collins Park" by Harris County Precinct 4 as a tribute to their community efforts.
Sylvia was "Sweetheart" to her husband, "Mother Dear" to her sons, "Gram" to her grandchildren, Aunt Sylvia and Aunt Patsy to her nieces and nephews, and a treasured friend to everyone she met. Her top priority in life was to be the best wife, mother, and grandmother possible. Her positive spirit and upbeat outlook were an inspiration to her family, and all of her encouragement and support played a vital role in helping others to achieve their goals. Sylvia enjoyed traveling, fine dining, and playing Scrabble with her children and grandchildren; and she cherished visiting with family and friends. Her kind, sweet manner will be missed as well as her outstanding memory and her ability to communicate effectively with people in a gracious way.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and seven sisters. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Donald R. Collins, Sr., CPA; her sons, Donald R. Collins, Jr., MD and wife, Janet M. Collins, and Robert W. Collins, Sr., ESQ and wife, Amy R. Collins; four grandchildren, Robert (Robby) W. Collins, Jr., Natalie C. Collins, Donald R. Collins, III, and Campbell M. Collins. Sylvia is also mourned by 5 generations of family members and many close friends.
Her family is grateful for the superior care and compassion that she received at St. Joseph Medical Center from the nurses and staff under the guidance of Dr. Sara Reddy, Dr. Thien Nguyen, and Dr. Carlos Barriga.

Dear Don, Janet and the Collins Family,

The world lost a truly special person in Sylvia. She was such a loving, kind-hearted, sweet and incredibly gracious person. She was a real class act! I so enjoyed our conversations when I would come to town to visit. Sylvia made me feel like one of her family. It's so very sad to lose such a positive and encouraging spirit. She had a wonderful life with true love in her husband, and devoted sons by her side and cherished grandchildren. Her memory and legacy will live on. It's heartbreaking to lose someone loved so much. May God comfort you all and give you peace.

To those of us who came to the district as young professionals, Mrs. Sylvia Collins was held in regard with the status similar to the most elegant and gracious of "first ladies" ever to reign at the White House. She and Dr. Collins represented all that was good and right about our district. She attended countless events throughout the years she and the superintendent represented the district in our educational community. We will always be grateful for their high standards, gentle spirits, and respectful demeanor.

His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning. Psalms 30:5

What a beautiful, loving obituary. My deepest condolences to Dr. Collins, a man I admired so much when I was a teacher at Klein High School during the 70's. And also to Don Jr., whom I have seen at the Petroleum Club in recent years. May God bless her soul.

Dear Don,
My heart is with you on the loss of your beloved mother. I remember when I met her. I was at an event and had gone into the ladies' room. This very elegant lady commented on my dress. She had the most beautiful smile and radiated warmth. We started talking and had a lovely conversation. Later that evening I found out she was your mother. I should have realized it-like mother, like son! She may be gone in body, but her spirit will live on in you and your children.
She will forever be remembered.
