Texas Anderson Obituary

Texas Anderson
06/20/1934 - 10/03/2024
Dr. Texas Anne Burroughs Anderson died peacefully at home on October 3rd, 2024.

Born June 20, 1934, in Harrisburg, IL, she was the eldest child of Edgar Wales and Texas Pringle Burroughs. Texas was a family name passed down from a Civil War nurse.

Texas graduated from San Jacinto High School, then completed a BFA and MFA at the University of Houston, focusing on fine arts and painting. She met Mel Anderson, Jr. at U. of H, and they were married in 1962. In the early 70's, they joined St. Francis Episcopal Church, a rich source of lifelong friends for the whole family and where she served as a member of the Vestry. After a divorce in 1977, Texas enrolled in Rice University Graduate School to study Anthropology and Archaeology. She entered residential real estate with Greenwood King Properties in 1986, made great friends among her coworkers and clients, and continued selling real estate well into her 80's. Texas was a member of the Rotary, the Friends of Fondren Library, and a diehard Rice baseball fan. She volunteered at the Guild Shop and as a Mentor for at-risk youth. She was a regular for morning coffee at Croissant et Brioche in the West University Village, yet another source of friends and engagement.

Texas is survived by her sister, Rebecca Burroughs Brandon; sons, Mel, Wes, and Eric; granddaughters, Claire and Freya; and daughters-in-law, Maria Anderson and Juman Malouf.

I was very, very sad when I heard of Texas' passing. She was a friend and fellow worker in real estate. She was amazing, smart, friendly, darling and successful at whatever she undertook. Prayers go to the family, of whom she was very proud.

I was very sad to hear of Texas's passing. She was a classy and kind person. As a builder, I loved the occasions when she had a listing or represented a buyer. She was good to deal with in business and had an interesting personal life. She told me how proud she was of her children!

I was a graduate student at Rice with Texas. My interest in urban archeology was awakened by working with her both in the field and in publishing collaborations on her Ashton Villa project in Galveston. Those experiences served me well in my subsequent decades of archeological work in Houston and elsewhere. I shall remember her as a keen, creative intellect and a kind and generous person.

Texas and I were grad students together at Rice University, and our boys were friends in preschool. We´d lost touch in recent years, but I always considered her a dear friend. My condolences to Mel, Wes and Eric and her other loved ones

Texas and I shared a "Pod" for over 20 years at Greenwood King. She was full of knowledge and we supported each other in personal and business life.
I will miss her dearly most of all as a friend and of course co-worker. Karin Tennant

Dear family,

I´m so sorry for your loss. I am praying for you all. May God give you comfort during this very difficult time. Please know that your loved one is safe in God´s memory (Proverbs 14:14,15). Just as God brought his son Jesus Christ back to life, he will do the same for your loved one as he has promised.

She and I sate on a Grand Jury together back in the 90's. I learned that she and my late co-worker Raymona Bomar were friends. She was a dynamic, creative, and interesting person whom I enjoyed sitting next to in our Grand Jury experience.
