Thomas Carr Obituary

Thomas Nathan Carr, 59, previously of Sugar Land, TX , passed away March 22, 2012, following a long and courageous battle with kidney cancer, fought to the very end with his signature dignity, resolve and sense of humor.
Tom was born March 21, 1953 in Vero Beach, FL to Curtis and Dell Carr, moving to Pensacola, FL at the young age of 3. Tom graduated from Pensacola's Woodham High School in 1971 where his athletic abilities earned him a college athletic scholarship.
Tom had a successful career spanning 36 years, primarily in the Marine Engineering and Construction industry where he was broadly admired and respected. Tom graduated from Tulane University in 1975 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. After working for International Paper for three years, he joined J. Ray McDermott where he spent the majority of his career in field operations, design engineering, project management, and business development. His work mainly focused on Gulf of Mexico projects including many record breaking platforms in ever increasing water depths, including what was to be a long standing record for the deepest Spar floating production platform named Devil's Tower in 5,600 feet water depth. Prior to this he was involved in the design of the Ligera platform in 930 feet in the 1980's and in the 1990's the deepest tripod platform named Cinnamon in 750 feet. He also worked for Atlantia Offshore from 2004 to 2006 and was involved with many deep water semi-submersible and tension-leg floating platform projects. In 2006, after returning to McDermott, he accepted postings in Baku, Azerbaijan and later in Singapore where he led McDermott's deep water strategy development in the Asia-Pacific region. His professional career featured continuously increasing positions of responsibility up to General Manager. He was known as an engineer's engineer and had an amazing ability to maintain his composure during the toughest of times. This had a calming effect endearing him to those who worked with him. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Florida and Louisiana and a certified Project Management Professional. He was a named inventor for two patents and published numerous technical papers during his career. He was an active mentor to many engineers and other technical staff during his career who admired his tenacious and competitive, yet always principled way of dealing with people and situations.
He is survived, honored and remembered by his wife of 30 years, Jan Beaugez Carr of Palm Coast, FL, daughter Jillian Carr of College Station, TX; his 92 year old mother, Dell Carr, and brother, William C. Carr, III of Gainesville, FL; sister, Betty Greathouse of Tampa, FL, and a very loving and supportive extended family. Tom was greeted in heaven by his father, William C Carr, Jr.
Tom was a member of Sugar land First United Methodist Church where he also sang in the choir and co-led the young married adults Sunday school class.
Tom's remains were tossed from the Mantanzas River Inlet Bridge a short distance from his Florida home. A celebration of Tom's life will be held on, Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Sugar Land First United Methodist Church, 431 Eldridge Road, Sugar land, TX with a reception following at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sugar Land First United Methodist Memorial Fund or to kidney cancer research through their website

Tom was one of the most admirable human beings we have ever met. His integrity will always remain as an example for our family. His friendship, together with his wife Jan and daughter Jill, has been an honor for us. We are sad for his departure from this world, but feel that he is among us in some way in another dimension. R.I.P., amigo.
