Uday Vasant Obituary

Uday Vasant Doctor, M.D.
1957-2020
Uday Vasant Doctor, M.D. passed away unexpectedly in Durango, Colorado on October 9, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. V. M. Doctor. He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Nancy, his two children, Emily and William, and his loyal canine companion, Sadie.

Dr. Doctor was born in Houston, Texas on December 11, 1957 at The Methodist Hospital. I guess you could say he was born to be a doctor. He graduated from Hempstead High School with high honors in 1976 and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University in 1979. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1983. In 1986 he completed his anesthesiology residency at Baylor College of Medicine followed by a combined pediatric and cardiac anesthesiology fellowship at Harvard Boston Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine.

He was an anesthesiologist at The Methodist Hospital for 10 years. During that time he was on the hospital's executive committee and served as clinical assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine. He became interested in regional anesthesia and decided to pursue a fellowship in Pain Management and Spinal Diagnostics at Baylor College of Medicine which he completed in 1995 under the direction of Michael McCann, M.D. Together they established SpineCare Consultants in Houston, Texas. At the time of his death, he was a member of Fondren Orthopedic Group and Chief of Spinal Diagnostics and Therapeutics Division at Texas Orthopedic Hospital.

Dr. Doctor was a passionate leader in the field of spinal diagnostics and therapeutics worldwide and he was a sought-after spinal consultant to many professional and college sports teams in Houston. He was a published author of two books, Dr. Doctor's Little Back Book and Straighten Up! and established The Straight Spine Safe Spine therapy and exercise program.

Dr. Doctor was a loving husband and devoted father. He had a vibrant passion for life, learning and sports appreciation which he instilled in his children. Through his extensive career, his mission was to improve the quality of his patients' lives. He developed lifelong friendships through his healing. He also was an avid outdoorsman. He loved fly-fishing with his brother-in-law Thomas, skiing with his family, biking through Galveston State Park and riding his scooter around Houston. He also loved a late-night outing to House of Pies with Nancy.
Uday was larger than life and will be forever in our hearts. A memorial service and burial are to follow at a later date.

Uday tutored me outside of our Bio 101 class about the Krebs cycle - he saw me fretting, offered his help, and taught it better than the prof did - he saved my career dream...I´ll never forget his happiness, communication, humility, and friendship!

Welp, Doc. I can tell you that you are still truly missed. Yolanda and Mary Ellen have worked so hard for your patients to absorb them into McCann´s practice. It occurs to me that I never asked you who I should go to if you "leave". Remember when I told you about my dream? I dreamed you retired. But when it was time to get my injections I pulled up in front of your house and you slowly crept down the walkway toward the van in a white coat with your curly white hair and cane. Yep, I was getting my spinal injections done in the back of a white panel van and was so happy! I think about that dream often. Wish you were here Doc. Save me a spot in the land where nothing hurts.

I had a procedure today done by Dr. McCann. As I was waiting in the hall by the procedure room, I saw Dr. Doctor´s outfit he wore when he did my procedures. It caused me to break down in tears before the staff moved me in. The staff was so sweet and made sure I saw the portrait of Dr. Doctor when I was discharged. Dr. McCann is great but I miss Dr. Doctor´s kindness, humor and his great smile. Prayers for his family and friends.

I just read the letter letting his patients know this very sad news and I’m in shock and so sad. I appreciated Dr. Doctor so much. He was a stand out from other doctors and took care of issues and pain in ways that others just wanted to throw meds at—for that he has my forever respect and love. You’ll be missed.

I am sitting here in disbelief of the letter I just received regarding the passing of Dr. Doctor. I have been a long term patient of his since 1998 through December of 2019 when I moved to CT. He was a Super Doc!! I trusted nobody but him to treat my neck and back along with his trusted cohort Mary Ellen. This is such a loss to the medical community. I loved his sense of humor. My sympathy to his family, friends, and staff.

He always took time to teach more about his procedures and really cared about helping me in developing my knowledge and care for his patients. My condolences to his family. My prayers are with you! He was unforgettable and will be missed by so many people. May God watch over you and comfort you!

I just read the letter from Fondren, and I am devastated! I started seeing Dr. Doctor back in 2004 on and off for neck and back injections, most recently a back injection this Aug. He gave me a copy of his book as well as lots of great tips on how to save my back from further damage. One suggestion was that I “buy a bunch of those grabby thingys” (lol) and keep them all over the house so I don’t have to bend anymore. He always had such a great sense of humor and was exceptionally personable. What a huge, huge loss to the medical field! Condolences and prayers go out to his family.

I had the honor of meeting Dr Doctor only at the beginning of 2020. He promised he could fix my pain after numerous others couldn’t or wouldn’t. He was so kind and such a joy to see prior to injection time. My last injection in June he said he loves life and so should we, I’ll never forget that. What an honor to be treated by such a great dr. He will truly be missed. My prayers for his wife and children, also his staff and associates. Rest In Peace Dr Doctor, you touched many life’s.

I was in shock when I opened the letter from Fondren Orthropedic. Dr. Uday Doctor was a very special and caring man who liked to joke. I've been seeing him since late '95 or early '96. I had never seen him in person before my first injection in my neck---I was laying face down when he came in letting me know what he was going to do. Still laying face down they started talking about their M.A.S.H units in Korea. What tales they were spinning because when he was through he told me to roll over and sit up. When I did and saw them all I started laughing telling them none of them was old enough to have been in Korea. We all started laughing. I'm going to miss your fantastic smile, wonderful laughter and very caring bed side manner. Everyone is going to miss. You have really helped me for almost 25years and still needing your help. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, your great caring staff and everyone who is going to miss you. My GOD give your family, staff and friends strenght in the days ahead. I will miss you.

He was my pain doctor since the late 1990s. I had my last interaction with him in June 2019. He was always down to earth and treated me well. I remember his little scooter accident and how he said his wife moved it to the curb and put a For Sale sign on it. I thought that to be hilarious. I wish his family the best in the future,

Dr. Doctor was more than my pain management physician. I saw him as a friend I got to know over 15 years and more than 40 rounds of pain relief. This afternoon we learned of this tremendous loss to the world. I have yet to stop crying. Dr. Doctor treated my husband for almost 17 years. We live and work on our ranch. Every time my husband came in for a shot, Dr. Doctor would say, “Are you still doing that “stuff” on the ranch? You’ll never get better.” We would all just laugh at his bedside manner. To his family we say Thank You for sharing this incredible, kind, caring, gifted man with us. We are so very sorry for your loss. We grieve with you. And to Dr. Doctor we say, “ Thank you. Rest well. You have served mankind to the best of your ability and we are grateful. “

I worked with Dr. Doctor as a new nurse. Early on, I was very intimidated to be in his room, but his love for teaching and medicine made that fear quickly pass. He always took care of the people that took care of him! He demanded excellence from his staff, which made us all better healthcare workers! I will always admire his energy and his ability to lighten the mood with his jokes and antics! Looking back on my last text to him when I asked him to work one of our patients in quicker than his office told us they could...... he said “anything for you and Walt ”. I will miss his snarky comments! Rest In Peace, my friend! You will never be forgotten!

Doc has been treating my pain since 2005. I last saw him in April of this year and he worked his magic again. I love that he was a very caring doctor but also a "straight shooter" when it came to communicating with his patients. I was always very proud that he was part of my healthcare team and I'm going to miss him greatly. Everyone who suffers with spinal pain needs a Dr. Doctor in their life.

This was the coolest guy I have ever met in a Doctor's office. I loved him. Dr. Robert Burke sent me to Dr. Uday, and I loved him and trusted him immediately. His energy, his compassion, his intelligence! He explained so much to me, helped me understand why I had so much pain. And then he said " we're going to get you on your feet again, and give you your life back." He did just that, and he became my hero. My heart is broken. I can't even fathom the huge vacuum his absence has left in his family. To you, I pray God's sweet peace as you struggle with his absence. To his patients, I pray we all find someone we can trust with our care, but I know the shoes of Dr. Uday Doctor are far too big to ever fill again.

Have known Dr. Dr at Methodist in 1995, my first year doing anesthesia, and liked working with him ever since. Even when there were years in between that I didn’t see him, each time I do, they were always good work days.
Looking back now, I consider myself lucky to have worked with him on a regular basis the last few years at TOH. We always talked & laughed about the good old Methodist days, about travels, current events, scooter riding, & just about life. It was great to work with an excellent doctor that I can also consider an awesome friend.
Nancy, Emily & Will, you’ll always hear this and I will say it again, may you find comfort in knowing that Doc was loved by so many, his patients, staff & all.

DOC...you were the best. You touched so many lives with your skill and heart.
Through 20 years of back pain you were always there to get me help. Your laugh and smile were genuine and you always made everyone feel like they were special. It was always reassuring to see walk into the room wearing your trademark cowboy boots with the surgical gown with laughter in your voice. I then knew all was going to be ok. Dr. Doctor,

There are no words to express what great happiness you brought to my heart. Having you and Nancy in our office was such a amazing experience. The love, kindness, patient, humble hearted man that you were to us and to your patients is something you don't see very often. I wish I could have thanked you more than once! But life took a different turn. You will truly be missed. And I wish I could see you one more time to tell you how great of a person you were! You made an amazing impact in my life and to the rest of the staff. By just a pat on the shoulder, it was enough to show your gratitude toward us. Dr. Burke's staff will never forget you. We will miss you very much! Until we meet again, Dr. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. Our deepest condolences and prayers to the Doctor Family. Nancy we love you very much and we are praying for you.

Uday Doctor was a good friend and employer. I first worked with him at TOH in the early 90's then at PSC in the late 90's to early 2000's which led to opening up Kirby surgical which lasted for over 15 years. He bought me my first pair of Jordans. To the family I pray that you'll get some relief knowing that he touched so many lives and that he will be truly missed. He was a Awesome man. May God bless you.

Uday was a ton of fun during our time together in little league. Also sure fixed up my shoulder on short notice - he said he would work me in for a bottle of fine tequila - which I brought into the operating room. Wish I could have spent more time with him. So sorry for this profound loss. Hang tough, Will.

I was devastated to hear of Dr. Doctor’s passing. He truly was one of a kind. His care for me with a spinal stenosis diagnosis allowed me to have a normal life these past 15 years. My condolences to his loving family. Gone much too soon. I was sure he would outlive this old woman. Rest In Peace, dear soul!

There aren't adequate words to express my sadness at losing such a fine person in the field of medicine. I've known him since he was a resident & referred many patients to him--not only is there now a void in our hearts, but in our professional community. He will be greatly missed.
Sincerest condolences,
Evelyn Jackson, FNP-C
